New flash, Yay?
But a beginner like me, only use the built-in flash.
So how much do a Sb-400 cost now?

its useful when u trying to burst fire.

I know, that is the purpose of the indicator :D
But not sure how practical it is, as in do we really look at the indicator? i am sure battery indicator will be more useful :)

the diffusers have their own zippered portion at the bottom of the pouch to keep them safe as well.

at the back of the pouch, there's a velcro compartment for the gels to be kept.

nikon really made a good job in designing the pouch for the SB900 user.

The pouch is quite nice with the additional compartment for the diffusers.
But I find it quite tall and I can't zip my camera bag if I put it in a vertical position :bsmilie: End up I just use back the old SB800 pouch and fix the diffisure on :)

a quick test shot

wow! such a great thread.
so tempting lei,i'm using sb800 now should i upgrade? or maybe
some expert here can share after using it.hand so itch again:bsmilie:

crap, thats a rich colour without blowing the skin out to be orange~! you tell us to hold our horses...er...sb800...and yet everyone's getting frumphy with the sb900 with no sign of retreat...can't hold le la~~

then wats the purpose of using color gel when the white balance remain white? :bsmilie:

The purpose of color gel in flash light, be it studio flash or camera flash, is generally 2 folders ie. balance the lighting WB or create certain color effects, not just the latter as you have thought.

There are 2 types of color gel for use with the flash. One type the SJ 900(the 4 pcs FL-GL1, FL-GL2, TN-A1, TN-A2 in the SB900 package) is to balance the flash WB under fluorescent light and incandescent/tungsten.

The second type, which is optional SJ-3 color gel set has 4 types of color gel (Blue, yellow, red, amber) which are to be used as color filters to change the color of lights.

This is actually similar to the use of color gel in studio lighting ie. used to balance the WB of tungsten light or for special color effects. Except that Nikon is innovative in integrating it into the flash/camera system with auto detection, making life easier for the photographer. That's all

ah, enlightened...

so for CLS will get the SJ-3 like studio color gels.

considering that this is the 1st flash which does flash color balance... would be kinda cool if there is a comparison of it used in different conditions, with or without.

For those who have the flash, page 10 of the quick guide has the example.

However for those without it, we may have to request Ortega or Lumiere, who loaned one set of SB900 and D700 with complete lens last night (for the weekend) to do a test for us.

Okie guys(Ortega and Lumiere) time to "cho kang" for Nikon liao ;p Sorry I can't do it myself as my personal set is also loaned out for the weekend

I shall change the title of this thread to more for a discussion of SB 900

Where can I loan this optional gel ???

You can get ready to pick his D700 as well .. :bsmilie:

eh.. when the D800 is launched lor. :bsmilie:

as much as i like/lust for the SB900, think i will resist cos a number of SB800 accessories (maybe) cannot fit the SB900.

Just got my SB900...what can I say...this is one BIG Kahuna!

Very impressed with its Gel detection and holder...better still...

...fits my GF Whaletail...just need to remove the extention for the SB800.

VIVA LA NIKON!

peng eik,
the TN gels...i notice got 2 variations for each.one darker tone, one lighter.
when do we use the lighter or the darker?
i thought all tungsten light (orangy) lights are the same?

btw guys, sb900 is cool, but the best thing i like about the sb900 is the pouch!
one pouch carries all!

wonder if they sell it individually so i can get the same one for my sb800s.
