It's already November and still no news of the price and availability of the Nikon GP-1 GPS.

For those in a hurry to geotag with Dx/Dxxx series, grab the 10 pin to RS232 GPS cable from Nikon and buy yourself a real GPS receiver instead of 3rd party flimsy addons. Ductape the cables and the GPS receiver to your strap and you're good to go. Heres a pic of my geotagging war-gear. Shown in the pic is a Garmin 76 12 Channel Marine GPS receiver with WAAS, it outputs standard NMEA0183, its waterproof, it floats and its abuse-proof!

That Nikon MC-35 GPS Adapter Cord alone costs as much as the Geomet'r GNC-35 GPS Receiver which comes with a 10-pin cord. Might as well just get the small and compact Geomet'r or di-GPS instead. :dunno:

Both the gadgets you mentioned were not available when I started geotagging photos 3 years + ago. :)

But if the price is reasonable, or below expected price, will you still buy it? :D

(you're using the D90 too right?)
The price of the setup inclusive of the cable will have to be about $100 to be acceptable given the inconvenient size since the Geomet'r GNC-35 GPS is only about $170.

That said, I had used the di-GPS Pro on my recent trip to geo-tag my images and it worked like a dream. :)

I find it is just an expensive setup and too cumbersome.

I do not geo tag my images unless necessary. Only on 2 occasions where I have to geo tag my images (bec of client requirements) I found the third party GPS (di-GPS if I am not mistaken) which I rented from xtemujin works well without any complaints. BTW those occassions were shooting from a heli for both aerial photo job. :) . Bottomline is that the 3rd party GPS is as real as any "Real GPS"

The unit is slated to be available at the end of the month, November, for a manufacturer's recommended retail price (MSRP) of $275 Canadian, S$340.

Yes, I'm using the D90.

I'll wait for the third party option.

MSRP of around 340 SGD? Street price may be around $290? Kinda expensive, I will say. Hopefully the performance is on par with the third-party options.

According to Nikon's website, the cable is not included in the package. It will still cost money. Also GP-1 doesn't support compass. Solmeta will produce a N90 for D90 which supports compass. The price will be around $200 and will be available within a month.

When will you update the Solmeta website to show the new GPS ?

Are you able to do an adapter from the circular 10 pin to the new square connector for those that have the old GPS ?

Nikon to ship GP-1 GPS Unit this month
Monday, December 1, 2008 | by Rob Galbraith

The GP-1 GPS Unit, Nikon's new hot shoe mount GPS module, is to ship this month at a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of US$239 in the U.S. (and popular online retailers have already begun to list the device for a little less than that). Included with the GP-1 are cables to connect it to the dedicated GPS port of the D90 as well as to the 10-pin remote socket of the D3X, D3, D700, D300 and D200.

The GP-1 GPS Unit was announced in late-August 2008.

I think that it's better to wait for the PC-Mobile solution and at a price of US$99.50.

Q: Can GN-1 be used with D90?

A: With suitable cable/adapter - YES. Because D90 uses a new 10-pin Nikon proprietary accessory port, we'll have to develop such connector, which takes time and we are working on it. We do not expect this to be available before end of January.

I wonder if future Nikon bodies will use the new square plug instead of the old circular one.

Third party GPS manufacturer Solmeta has come out with the DP-GPS N90 for the Nikon D90 at a price of US$175 with shipping and handling charges and will be available at the end of December 2008.

Solmeta will have one for N90 within the week and the price will be $175 include shipping.
