King Tiger, Azzurri,

No worries. :)

It looks like there is no On/Off/Auto selector switch on the GP-1 unlike the Dawntech and Solmeta GPS solution. There's a possibility that it'll drain the camera battery.

I would suggest a wait and see attitude before getting one.

This is just for illustration purposes only to get an idea of the difficulty to use the Nikon GPS GP-1 with the new GPS square connector on the side of the D90.

This is a SATA straight cable on the side of my D200. With a straight wire connector, it's going to interfere with the end users handling the D90 camera.

This is a SATA L connector cable on the side of my D200.

I do hope that the Nikon GPS GP-1 cable is the L connector type as there is a possibility of using an L bracket and less obstrusive for the end users if the L connector is flushed with the side of the D90.

I've contacted Dawntech and they'll also come out with a GPS solution for the D90 in November.

If the GP-1 cannot match Dawntech's product in terms of feature and performance then its only advantage will be that it can be used on both D90 and D200 and upwards models.

Just out of curiosity; been always wondering, why is there a need for a GPS unit on cameras? Is it to keep track of where you took the pictures? :dunno:

GPS is useful for journalist, forensics, military, even the geo tagging enthusiast community..
It may be a little unnecessary for the everyday photographer though.

Okays, so what would be the cheapest way to geo-tag photos then? I know these devices/accessories will probably just record the longitudes and latitudes, but what kind of software do we use to translate that to location names? I presume these software will come bundled with the GPS package?

Anyway here is a pic how it will be mounted on your D90

Erm, any answers?

You can use Picasa and it'll show the location on Google Earth.

If you've a flickr account, you can use a third party app to show the location on Google Earth.

HTH.

Hmm... okays, so I supposed when I upload to flickr it can show it was taken in this place, e.g. New York, USA? Or only list the lat/long values?

Hope the price is right... since I'm going overseas next year for an extended amount of time... :)

I see that you've a flickr account.

Download and follow the instructions on this website.

I've geotagged most of my Australia flickr photoset especially the landscape photos and you can try to see how it works with Google Earth.

Some of the photos coordinates are way off because of time drift.

HTH.

Yayness! Thanks for the tip! :)

Read from Nikonians that there are rumors of the GP-1 selling at retail price of 175 USD.

But wonder if the MC-36 can be fitted to the GP-1 or only the MC-DC2 will be able to do so?

Thanks for the link. Looks like there's no real need to get the MC-36, what's more, I like the design of the MC-DC2 better than MC-30.

But if the GP-1's performance is not up to par with the di-GPS, I will need to reconsider despite the di-GPS having a higher price tag.
The di-GPS Pro is finally available for ordering... buy buy buy ! ;)

Alternatively, can just use the iPhone 3G to take and log spot GPS readings and incorporate them into the images later on.
