The di-GPS Pro is finally available for ordering... buy buy buy ! ;)

Alternatively, can just use the iPhone 3G to take and log spot GPS readings and incorporate them into the images later on.

Now that's a good excuse to get the iPhone 3G :bsmilie: but I think I willl dread the later part on incorporating the coordinates into the images, unless there is a software taking care of that.

We'll have to wait in November but some who are more familiar with GPS have said that the Nikon GP-1 has the same performance of a SiRFStar III chipset.

I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence as it shares the same model number like the Sony GPS-GP1, GPS datalogger, which uses the old SiRFStar II chipset that's not usable in urban areas.

Personally for me, I've been through the hassle of geotagging using a GPS and a GPS datalogger, where you'll need a computer, switch on two devices(GPS datalogger and camera), syncronise the date and time on the camera with a GPS and time drift where the coordinates are not accuracy geotagged.

That's my reason for needing a GPS solution to geotag in camera, directly written into the EXIF.

Thanks for the link. Looks like there's no real need to get the MC-36, what's more, I like the design of the MC-DC2 better than MC-30.

But if the GP-1's performance is not up to par with the di-GPS, I will need to reconsider despite the di-GPS having a higher price tag.

I'm using iMarkMySpot available from the App Store at a princely sum of US$0.99 to help in geo-tagging my images in lieu of the di-GPS Pro. Seems to be very easy to use...

Haven't actually tried it out in the field yet though. Will be doing so in my forthcoming trip to Jiuzhaigou.

Another way of using the iPhone 3G to geo-log images is to take a photo of each location with the iPhone. The iPhone 3G will geo-tag every image it takes and the GPS data from those photos could be easily copied over to non-geo-tagged photos taken by other cameras using geo-tagging software later on.
A powerful and yet free geo-tagging software that could be used for this purpose is GeoSetter !
Get it here:

Cheap workarounds for those who already have the iPhone 3G ! :)

For D200/300/700 user can consider GeoTag from eastgear, I'm using one and is really value for $ :)

The di-GPS Pro is now on the way to me. :)

Unfortunately, the Nikon GPS GP-1 uses the straight connector to connect it to the D90 camera instead of an L connector.

This will hinder the end user to use the camera.

Maybe there will be third-party cables with an L-shaped connector.

Waiting to see how the D300-compatible cable will be like.

Eagerly waiting for the street price of GP-1 :D

Actually, couldn't your hands fit in between the cable and the body?

Yeah, now only eagerly waiting for the price...

You've to use it in the field to really understand the issues of using the GPS with a straight connector instead of an L connector.

HTH.

People don't read that far back... :)

On the D90, Nikon has changed the circular 10 pin input to a tip styled input.

But the Nikon GP-1 comes with the GP1-CA10 for connection to the 10-pin remote terminal of supported cameras as standard accessory right? So can use for both old and new DSLRs?

I've already stated about it on page one of this thread.

Hmmm I might have missed it when I've read it....

Why don't just get this instead?

Same function, cheap and available now.

So do you have this GPS unit. I am interested on this but not sure how well it works. I have asked about it here but I think my thread got moved somewhere else...anyway no reply on that...

Solmeta will produce a GPS which combines with the data logger. That is it can record gps information directly into exif of the photo and it can also record trace.

I have the di-GPS Pro ... it has the same GPS chipset and seems to work the same way as the Geomet'r GNC-35 GPS. When connected to the Nikon DSLR, the DSLR and GPS will detect each other. Once the GPS locks in on the location, whatever longtitude/latitude coordinates will be stored into the EXIF of the respective images taken by the camera.

When will Solmeta comes out with the GPS for the D90 or an adapter from the circular ten pin to the new square pin on the D90 ?

That is not a standard mini usb port. So we are still experimenting on finding a solution.

Thank you for your interest.

This is a good thread. The Geomet'r GNC-35 GPS Receiver is very affordable at $170 only. IMHO this is a very affordable GPS receiver for photographers who want to geotag their pics. Works the same as any other GPS receiver I guess so it is good enough. To top it off, it comes with SiRF III chipset that acquires satellite real fast - very important. There is also on-off switch on the cable. I will get this if I need one. But now I don't need. :bsmilie:
