Sorry about a basic question.
Does geotagging write the information into the raw file?

Yes, the GPS coordinates will be embedded into the RAW files EXIF and stays there when you convert it to Jpeg.

Anyone has ever in use with GP-1. It seems many people have already ordered it.

Our GPS for D90 is out next week. Also two new product will be ready soon.

When will the new GPS for the D90 be out and the two new products from Solmeta ?

Thanks.

According to Nikon's website, the cable is not included in the package. It will still cost money. Also GP-1 doesn't support compass. Solmeta will produce a N90 for D90 which supports compass. The price will be around $200 and will be available within a month.

Are you sure that the N90 from solmeta is provided with a 2D-Compass?
In the comparison chart http://www.solmeta.com/en/products_detail.asp?id=1 only the N2, the Geotagger and its PRO-Version (latter both not available until now) are mentioned to be provided with a compass.

Greetings from Vienna,

The product for D90 is ready. And for 2 axis compass, we will only make it upon orders. Also you may buy the version for D90 with 2 axis compass directly from our reseller.

Our Geotagger will be ready in Mid Jan. And it will be on sale before the end of Jan. for sure. It has some improvement than N2. It is also small, lightweight and more easy to operate.

And our Geotagger Pro may be ready at the end of Jan.

I've just received my Solmeta DP-GPS N90 for use with the Nikon D90 and quite impressed with the package included.

Priced at US$175 including shipping and handling charges, it's definitely cheaper than the Nikon GP-1 solution at US$209.

I've not yet tested the unit outdoor yet.

Some photos to share.

I've tested and evaluated the Solmeta N90, it's good to go.

However, someone in Nikon had a brain freeze with the connector on the left side and there is a tendency of hitting the wire when changing the M/A selector switch on the lens as the connector protrusion is quite long.

I would suggest this type of connector for the D90, this a remote controller for the iRiver H300 mp3 player.

That is a great suggestion. Thanks xtemujin. We will reconsider the L shape connector.

I was using the Solmeta N90 during Thaipusam and the straight connector was a major hindrance, while using the camera and stowing my camera into the camera bag, I was afraid that the connector will break if I'm not careful as the protrusion is quite significant.

PC-Mobile has come out with a L-shaped connector for the Nikon D90 , I decided to buy one to try it out.

First and foremost, all items were bought using my own pocket money and this review is my own personal opinion.

I've used the Solmeta DP-GPS N90 and the PC Mobile GN-1 GPS for my D90.

However, I've issues with the Solmeta straight connector and the PC Mobile push button which either jammed On or Off, unable to switch it Off or On. Both GPS have no Auto function.

The Solmeta DP-GPS N90 Auto function does not work as explained by Solmeta to me by email. The Auto function is whereby the GPS unit is either switched On or Off by the power selector on the camera.

Solmeta straight connector which hinders the end user.

I decided to get the Dawntech di-GPS mini IIs which was released on 2nd April 2009.

]GPS[ Heaven and Earth - a set on Flickr

Solmeta DP-GPS N90

Pros:
1. Internal battery
2. Full accessories
3. Good built

Cons:
1. Auto function does not work
2. Straight connector hinders end user while using the camera and keeping the camera in a bag, high possibility of the connector breaking.
3. Big

PC Mobile GN-1 GPS

Pros:
1. Cheap
2. L shaped connector
3. Ability to change connector to ten pin input

Cons:
1. Cheap built
2. Push button has a tendency to jam On or Off
3. No Auto function
4. No internal battery

Dawntech di-GPS mini IIs

Pros:
1. Reasonably priced
2. L shaped connector
3. Small
4. Good built
5. Auto function does work

Cons:
1. No internal battery
2. No input for shutter release

I would highly recommend the Dawntech di-GPS mini IIs compared to the two products that I have purchased.

Solmeta needs to listen to it's customers feedback to change it's straight connector to a L shaped connector and make the Auto function works.

PC-mobile needs to change that POS push button.

HTH.

Thank you for your post and we are building a L shaped connector for D90 right now. We do respect users suggestion.

And we hope we can get more comments on our product.

My feedback on Solmenta DP-GPS N1+ I bought in this Jan for my winter trip to Hokkaido in feb.

What I like is the available internal battery that will not use the camera power. Small enough to carry and the short cable is just sufficient to fit to the hot shoe and not too long which can cause entanglement to others items.

The main and the biggest upset is the the GPS stop working on the second day in Hokkaido and never recovered on the rest of my stay there. It starts working again 2 months after coming back to Singapore. Looks like it can't stand the weather in Hokkaido even though it state that it could operate down to -10 degrees celsius.

Sorry just saw it. And just report it to our technician. Not too sure about it, normally it can resist 20 degree below zero and we will do some test again. You may also send it back for test.

I bought the Solmeta N2 to use with the Nikon D700. The USB cable easily comes loose when connected to the GPS unit itself, and once that happens, it will not work at all. In other words, when I first connect, everything works, I get the signal. When the cable comes loose, it will not work even powering on and off, and doing all sorts of things. The cable to the GPS unit needs serious work, and it does not even connect properly as there is a cover that gets in the way.

I consider this one of those things you better avoid. So far, I have managed to get GPS data on like 10 images.

I'm not using a Solmeta 10 pin but a Dawntech 10pin, I'm not sure about the "cover" on the Solmeta.

There is a silver cover on the connector of the Dawntech and you'll need to screw it in to reduce the chances of the connector disengage.
