S$1400 before GST = S$1498 with GST. I paid $52 more for the cam before CNY.. I think worth it !

Hey guys, I've been thinking about upgrading from my G2 since it has been giving me lots of recording problems lately when I'm shooting video (after a failed hack). I was quite ready to buy a GH3, but the price is a bit steep - I'm currently in the US so I can get it on Amazon at 1299USD once it's back in stock. The GH2, on the other hand, is only 649USD, so that is definitely a steal.
My biggest question, and I've already read a lot of reviews to just make myself even more confused, is whether it is worth it to just go straight to the newest camera available, or will the GH2 suffice? I'll still be primarily shooting photos, but I plan to shoot videos and short films, especially during my time here in the US, and I know that the GH2 can be hacked to give the highest bit-rate. But after my failed experience with the G2, I'm not very confident with hacking anymore. Hence I seek the advice from you guys: 600USD saved can be channelled to my travel plans in the US, but the GH3 gives me the assurance that I have the best in almost every aspect, with the exception of the EVF (the build quality, dual dials and headphone jack really appeal to me but I'm not sure if they're worth the extra 600 USD)
I guess what I want to know for sure is, I will not be shortchanged if I get a GH2 unless I...?
*I'm just a journalism student with a keen interest in documentary and short-film making. Don't think I have any skill or guts to go commercial just yet. Maybe for photos, but definitely not video. Video-making is just a hobby and an area where I hope to learn and improve.

I had the gh2 and now gh3. The gh2 is very hackable and is no way like the g2 hack. I owned a g2 before and also hacked it so I know what you mean. There are very clear instructions when you download the latest ptools. Once you change the bit rate and whatever other parameters you just write to a new version of firmware and load into the cam.
A hacked gh2 is very stable. You just need to find the sweet spot between bitrate n spanning. Some hacks don't let you span. There's a thread on safe settings for gh2 on VK's site. Just do some research and you'll be ok.
So unless you need/ want some of the new features or really don't want to do any hacking. I suggest the gh2.

Future proof your investment.. If you have the cash, go for the GH3..you won't regret it..

Thanks for the advice and reassurance about the GH2 hack. May I ask why did you decide to upgrade from GH2 to GH3?

1) weather sealing. Sometimes in sg weather, it starts to drizzle. Normally with my gh2 or other cams, I just run and hide. Sometimes like for chingay, you do miss shots.
2) better still IQ in high iso (iso 3200). I shoot quite a lot in dim lighting. Especially at events. So every bit of IQ helps
3) better OLED vs LCD in bright light. When you use the articulated display to frame when you shoot outdoor video. The OLED on the GH3 is just much better
4) bigger battery. More shots / longer video between charges
5) 3.5" mic input. I use a rode videomic pro. On the GH2 I had to use a 3.5" to 2.5" mic adapter. It gets in the way sometimes
6) headphone jack to listen to the live recording. This is especially if you don't use any xlr equipment and record direct to the cam. I've shot some events using the gh2 and I thought the audio was soft enough but on playback, it's too loud. This feature allows you to set the audio input correctly.
7) typical Singaporean. I want the latest and greatest

on the other hand, pany Sg package their deal with shops such that the shops have to buy in a bulk consist of body only and with kit lens (plus some accessories).. hence if the shop is unable to get rid of those kit package, it will affect their abilities to buy new stock..
some might consider buying the kit package and sell away the lens..

I shoot handheld sometimes so the OIS became essential.. But in terms of stills IQ, I still think the oly lens is slightly better..
So for your case, what is limiting your craft? The hacked GH2 is great, like I wrote in a few posts above, unless you really need something the Gh3 offers. For the 12-35 it's the same. The 14-54 mk2 is such a good lens, only if the slower AF or lack or OIS or AF during video is limiting, then go lens first..but you can always MF and that solves the issue.. Unless you are an events shooter.. Then I say lens first. The 12-35 is super fast and accurate for AF.
