Just to inform you that this morning at about 10am, the chick flew off with its parents. I was in office and my wife was the only one at home. She was "trained" to take some shot by just squeezing the cable release and when she noticed the chick got more and more out of its nest, she was trying to capture and then all in a sudden, she was gone....

Yes, I did keep a diary documenting the whole episode.

17 Jan 09 - parents started to build their nest
28 Jan 09 - Bird nest almost completed. Birds stopped coming back for a few days after.
3 Feb 09 - Mother bird was seen sitting inside her nest from this day onward
21 Feb 09 - Saw the chick for the first time
4 Mar 09 - Chick took off and leave its nest.

Too bad you have missed the 'final' event after waiting patiently for so long. But thanks for your time in tracking the bird's development and taking the photos to share with us. My wife and kids had a fun time appreciating your effort.

Pearl - I certainly hope that they will visit soon. In fact, to my greatest surprise, the mother bird came back and sat inside the nest again for the whole night last night at about 7.20pm. Whether the chick was inside I have no way to know. When I left my house at 7am, she was still inside. Looks like they could still come back to rest at night only. I am more than willing to let them. I intend to leave the nest there for good. May be one day, they will come and lay more eggs.

Sunbirds are known to reuse the nest for second batch of eggs. They will return in a fortnight time to refurbish the nest if they feel that the nest location is not threatened. So Raymond do keep us informed.

They did not come back. So I guess its goodbye for now.

Hey Raymond, really happy and glad that your little darling fledged successfully... and your "flight" shots are really good and sharp! Well done bro! Btw, what shutter speed did you use?

And do keep the nest - my friend also decided to keep the nest (they did consider removing it at one stage) but are glad they didn't - since a pair (they're not sure if same pair) just spent a week "remodelling" the nest - added a 'porch' (cover) over the opening and repairing the walls etc... but have not started to nest in it yet. So hopefully she'll get to host another nesting soon !! hehe

So you may be host again sooner than you think ! we certainly hope so - so that we all get to follow the progress again through your lens!

But I also have sad story to relate - for the nest in my office... my colleague reported that it fell down last week during one especially rainy day.. and the 2 chicks were then exposed to the elements.. and they hid in the ferns at the base of the palm tree.. the next day only one survived and the weaker one was found dead... probably from the cold since the nest was destroyed and it was raining... very sad... :cry:

But on the bright side, the remaining chick grew well - my friend named it 'fat girl' ! haha... and probably fledged yesterday as it was seen yesterday but not today... so hopefully at least one survived and fledged successfully...

So keep your fingers crossed for another round soon !!! Good luck and thanks for the open invitation to shoot... but sadly I'm still on the road and mostly overseas... keep us posted!

I am really amazed that you have taken the whole process of birds nesting. The pics are well taken, a lot interesting shots.
You are really lucky to have the birds choice to pick your home. I learned from your threads and am also in the process of taking nesting pics, will post when I am ready. Thanks so much for sharing.

Just to update csnappers, the pair of sunbird has made their return since three days ago. They had been coming to "repair" and rebuild the nest and I think in no time, female bird will start to lay her egg again.
Since I was free during weekends, I took some photos of the bird flying in. Hope you like them. Thanks for viewing.

So here you go.... the sunbird mother came and roost on her nest since last weekends. Yesterday as I was on leave, I took a peek into the nest when she left the nest to hunt for food and found two tiny eggs within! I am so excited now that I am going to get two chicks instead of one this time.

I gather the eggs will hatch in about 7 days' time.. so more photos to come...
