Sony DSLT-A77 and 16-50 f/2.8 SSM hands-on review

think he referring to the focusing point.... it can be hard for 70 plus people to see where the points are

They're bigger than on the N and C cameras...

Did some more tests today against nex5n and g3.

From the looks of it, a77 scores pretty much similar in these 3 cameras.

It really depends on the jpeg settings and from what i observe, a77 is no slouch even up till iso6400. For extra 50% resolution, i think a77 easily wins them over. When i downsize the files to 16mp, a77 files actually looks sharper, better colors at high iso. Noise is pretty much quite similar, to me at iso6400, all cameras are lousy.

Thats why we have f2.8 zooms, f1.4 primes and lots more lenses with a-mount to fully explore the potential of a77 compared to the other 2 cams i compared with much much lesser lens options.

Will be shooting over the weekends and probably compile and post some comparison shots.

I had a chance to play around with the A77 w/16-50 yesterday at the Ion Sonystyle shop.

It feels very familiar, coming from an A700 user. My main objective was to check out the peaking function (I have many M42 lenses and I also love shooting close-ups, not necessarily macros). It was a real pleasure! So easy peasy on the eyes, thanks also to the really bright EVF. I tried peaking on the text on the display, which is at an angle. I can see exactly where the text was in focus. This would have been hard to do with AF as one would likely use centre-focus and re-compose, which invariably will lead to focus being off.

I didn't have enough time to figure out how to get the magnify to focus, can't remember which button and if it works with EVF or only LCD.

The shutter is really quite!

I tried a few very quick left-right-left panning but see no tearing/streaking. This EVF is much better than that I see in the A55.

Will probably go there another to spend a bit more time to get better acquainted with the camera.

Definitely a camera I can be very happy with. Time to consolidate funds.

Hi I tried the a77 at tampines one Sony. I like the grip, suitable for big hands. But settings like changing metering and AF mode have to press the fn button to bring up and change, which I find a bit not use to it. The HDR mode is quite nice to have. :)

just touched a77 today also

AF, there's a dial besides lens mount. focus magnify, can go to menu, assign the "smart tele" button to "focus magnify".

very nice camera indeed!

Collected my A77 with kit lens last night.
Light, good grip, fast af, fast shutter, fantastic evf, etc...
Definitely a huge improvement over A33. Should not have anything to complain...

But somehow, I am not 100% satisfied with the pictures.
Will try to spend more time with it tomorrow.

Get a 77 an do some quick testing,
Is it normal for the body to shut itself down a few seconds (~4sec) after turn the dial to off ?

Like it does the anti-dust shake 4s after you switch it off? Yeah.

Thanks for the info, Just find it weird that the anti- dust shake happen only after 4 seconds later followed by lens turning to infinity point. In older DSLR it happen almost immediately after switch off.

Saw your sale thread at BnS. Just wondering what did you compare it to and what are you using previous. Care to share your perspective on this. Thanks.

just tried A77 @ iso800, abit noisy i feel..
my Af is at the logo there... it's cleaner there

coming from A33 for me A77 noise control is much better come to think of it its 24MP vs 14MP but still at ISO1600 the noise is acceptable for me.

here's two sample just shoot to test using 1680 lens indoor with poor lighting (sorry this is not studio shooting but real life)
