Sony DSLT-A77 and 16-50 f/2.8 SSM hands-on review

Yup this is normal. Different RAW converters will have different results. C1Pro for example is the "cleanest" with the highest detail, but muted colors.

a lot more difference compared to my a55 raws though

Question on RAW: I heard that a77 has very bad JPEG outputs, and not shooting on RAW would be a complete waste of time...

If I shoot on RAW, and say have no time and batch process them, would I get better results than I shoot on JPEG in the first place?

and is this generally true not just for the a77?

In general, for ALL cameras, RAW is best. But if you're in a rush, the JPEG engine of the A77 is not that bad really, but you do lose a lot of detail especially when you shoot higher than ISO 3200. If you do not shoot that high, or you are only making small prints, or resizing for web, you will not notice an issue. Also, remember that you can add a sharpen step in your batch process.

Agree. In fact for pixel peepers, any cameras out there including FF like D700 and 5D2 are also noisy even from iso3200 onwards. Even with these good iso performers, raw is still the only way to fully maximise the potential.

If one view the picture at "sane" distance, resolution and mindset, most cameras including p&s nowadays can do well at high iso even in jpeg.

The only diffentiator i would see from bigger sensors camera would be the creativity of DOF which p&s are harder to achieve.

DR and color tonality are the other 2 things that can really make a picture have that "wow 3D" look.

So far i have shown some pictures to my colleagues that all of them commended that they seems to really hv that 3d look which stands out from the rest.

I'm worried about how large a RAW 24MP file would be... =\

I was thinking about sticking to RAW + JPEG, I know most people do that to correct shots that require some touch up... But 24MP, urgh I'd probably need a couple of S.D. cards lol

*(I haven't got the a77 yet, I'm just sorting out these issues before taking the plunge :p)

You dun really need to shoot at 24mp all the time.

For me, i normally shoot at medium (12mp) jpegs. If i feel its important event or scene, then i will switch to raw + medium jpegs.

ooo great! I was thinking along those lines too! (RAW + smaller jpeg)

nice... looks like I'm all set to get broke

Newbie question. Would the in-camera NR be able to improve the noise OOC? Not sure if those pics posted have NR on? If on, what level of NR is used?

I've been shooting with 24MP since the A900 came out... Usually I have 2 8GB cards, but only ever use one. Even my old PC has no problem, I'm loving the detail I can get.

Cards are cheap nowadays. Don't worry. :)

NR by nature will clean up JPEG images, but you sacrifice detail. If you really need the detail, shoot in RAW and process separately.

Sorry to bother you Rashkae, but since you have experience on this, how large is a typical image 24mp RAW + JPEG? :)

on A77 raw roughly 24MB and jpeg rouhgly 5MB if you shoot raw+jpeg it'll be around 440 pix per 16GB

RAW files are about 24MB, the JPEG is 4-8MB depending on the picture.

roughly how many raw photo can we take using 8gb card?

Anyone tried capturing video using screwdrive lenses like the 16-80 or 16-105 yet?
Just would like to know if the focusing noise is very audible in real life outdoor situations with some background noise.
Thanks~

worst i've used tamron 1750 when you're outside or taking noisy vid ppl talking etc you wont hear it unless you really want to focus on the noise. in real life the envirometal noise specially wind over comes the screw noise =) when maybe you're taking vid of your sleeping baby then yeah you could hear it even when you're zooming =).

I would say maybe 90% of the time you're taking vid outside or with noisy enviroment =)
