Shanghai Trip

Xihu is said to be very nice.. but maybe not in winter coz the flowers would not be in bloom..

But if it is covered in white then it's be a different kind of beauty.. there's some picture I took last year of XiHu.

Very rarely does it snow in HZ or Sha nowadays. Even if it does, the snow usually melts on contact with the ground. Last year and the year before last was different with freak weather and there were tons of snowfall. This is how westlake look like normally in winter. Your biggest problem will be Fog.

Bros, do you think the H1N1 vaccine is necessary with regard to travelling to Shanghai?

IMHO I don't think it is necessary. H1N1 is not a fast acting virus, and can be treated easily with proper influenza drugs. The danger is normally for older people and children. Seriously speaking, I am no doctor, so do whatever gives you peace of mind.

Hi daredevil, are there any night markets or good places to visit during evening period? Morning and afternoon plans mostly done. :)

Shanghai are pretty much deviod of night markets. The one I know of is quite far in the LongBai (龙白) area. That is also where most of the Korean tribe people hang out. And it is now winter, I am not even sure if the night markets will still be there in winter time.

Hmm.... so in short, there's nothing much to see / do during evening save going to The Bund or either one of the tall towers for night view, is it?

I'll be in Shanghai again this dec...but for work. I see many in the tourist area 步行街,外滩etc. And they carry kit lens only. One thing, 外滩 is under renovation for the World Expo. You are not able to take the river shot and it's very dusty.

Also you'll need tripod for the night scenes in all your destinations.

Here's my takes recently in Shanghai, courtesy from my handphone.

Really? Not able to take the river shot from the Bund? That's very bad news, it's the quintessential Shanghai shot!

I'm going to Shanghai from 17 to 23 Dec. At first planned to travel Shanghai only, but family wanted to join tour group for SH + Jiang Nan, so will be going to Su Zhou, Hang Zhou and some places around there. Hoping for good shots!

Bring spare battery, the cold at night drains them faster.

But go to the other side, called BinJingDaDao, the riverside park off Super Brand Mall is still open and that is the nicer nice IMHO.

Hi, daredevil, please recommend some nice and good places for supper! ;p

If you are interested to make tailored clothing or suits, jackets... You need to go to No.399 LuJiaBang (陆家浜路) Road at the junction of Nanchang Lu(南仓路), this is the 上海南外滩轻纺面料市场. This is where I get my suits, leather jackets and china WongFeiHong style clothing made. They also make cashmere jackets/coats there. Remember to bargin. A full business suit (jacket and pants) should cost around 550 RMB there (labor and cloth included). Cashmere wool coats cost around 600-800 custom made. Prices fluctuate sometimes. I have a regular tailor there. So PM me if you are interested in his contact.

Bro, a bit confused here, according to map, LuJiaBang Lu is before Xujiahui Lu, right? But Nanchang Lu is nearer to central Huai Hai Lu which is fuuther up NW by a couple of streets. I fail to see the link..... can you elaborate further? But if you meant the junction where Xiajiahui Lu meet Chongqing Lu (S) and Nanchang Lu, then I got it.

This is the place

Use google maps better.

Tons around. One of the joints I go to a lot is this Macau style tea restaurant called XingWang (新旺). It gets extremely crowded at lunch dinner and around 1-2am when all the clubbing people just got out of the clubs. There are several, one is near Babyface club, one is on XianXia Lu in Hongqiao aread. There are many more, just don't remember them all.
See here for more:

Very very authentic macau/hk style food. There is a Xingwang in singapore also (at heartland mall), but it really sucks when compared to the ones in shanghai and I doubt they have nothing in common other than the name. Not related whatsoever.

If you want to eat Xiaolongxia (小龙虾), aka crawfish, aka yubbies, they are everywhere. The famous one is at Fuxing Lu复兴路, Maoming Lu. 茂名路. Joint is called Fumao Xiaolongxia (复茂小龙虾). It is a big time chain now with many stores. See here for outlets:

What other kind of food do you want to try? Shanghai is a heaven for food. Yes, use the dianping website to find food and reviews. It is the biggest food review website in China and it is has the most coverage in Shanghai.

Hi daredevil, according to the weather forecast website recommended by you, Shanghai seems to be experiencing rain almost every day, won't this make it difficult to take shots in the open? Sigh.....

From what I experienced last year, the raining season stops around early Dec. Now (of last year) is the raining season.

Time to buy a rain cover for your camera. around $30 for a good one. Check mass sales. I remember Dimage has quiet a few.

I've been in shanghai since thursday and it hasn't rained yet, but weather is getting colder and i think tomorrow onwards there will be quite a large amount of rain.

Now i'm very slightly north in Nantong, and it was really foggy on the way here, but quite a nice mood to the landscape. miss my camera otherwise can (try) take some nice foggy landscape shots. Then again, i dun really have time to walk around so i guess it wouldn't help even if i had brot camera

Hi all, many many thanks for all your kind feedback esp to daredevil, I will be flying off this coming Mon, will share my thoughts with all when I am back. Meanwhile, please keep the info rolling in (will help those who plan to go there now or in the near future). :)

Upz for all!
