2. It is really up to you really. I travel with a Tamron 17-50/2.8 with 55-200VR and 50/1.8 and SB600. I do not bring my tripod because I have a travel tripod I leave at my home in shanghai. My tripod setup in SG stays in SG. Sometimes I bring my prosumer with me, but I am doing that less and less nowadays.
4a. Same as HK prices. Make sure you do not buy grey set. Ask if it is local set (HangHuo) or grey set (shui huo - water goods). Things like china brand tripods are a lot cheaper in shanghai. Check out Benro, Sirui, Triopo tripods. Cheap over there. Other things to check out there are the lambency and china made diffusers. Accessories like camera bags (china brand, I own like 3, quite good), filter cases, hand grips, step up rings, spirit level, etc... are really cheap there. Oh if you do visit the camera mall near Shanghai Railway station called HuanLong, be sure to visit Orient Photo's HQ store in that building. It is quite huge.
You need to know the Chinese names for the brands. Manfrotto (Man Fu Tu), Nikon (Ni kang), Canon (Jia Neng), Tokina (Tu Li), Sigma (Shi Ma), Tamron (Teng Long), Velbon (Jin Zhong), Gitzo (Jie Xin), Benro (Bai Nuo) just to name a few. If you are not sure, just go to
http://www.google.cn and type in the brand in english. You should see some links of the chinese equivalent. Also check prices on the internet
Here.
For Zhouzhuang and Tongli, I suggest going through the
Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center (旅游集散中心. As usual the
chinese version of this site is more packed with info. This is the same center at Shanghai Stadium that a bro in a previous post mentioned. From this center, you can take bus tours to many many locations. If going to Zhouzhuang, I recommend you take the early bus at 7:25am. You will reach Zhouzhuang at around 9am, and most shops are not open yet at time in winter and you will get to see the real zhouzhuang with people living their life there. Once you hit 11am, the tourist crowd will rush in and you will have no more chance to take
peaceful pictures. Tongli is only 10km from Zhouzhuang. So you can consider lumping the trip together. But it is really up to you how you want to travel. Thing is if you want to lump the trips together, you have to talk to the Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center. I think they are not very flexible with tickets. THey have a number listed on the websitel. Call them. Hope you can understand mandarin.
Do take note that the Shanghai Sightseeing Bus center has a new branch at Shanghai South Bus station (different from Shanghai south raiway station although the 2 of them are side by side). Do double check which location serves which tour destinations. I remember the bus to Huangshan leaves from Shanghai South Bus station. Oh ya, you can consider Huangshan also, which is 5.5hours bus ride from Shanghai. But looking at your schedule you most probably do not have time.
Suzhou city itself, I do not find the charm anymore. Unless you are there for business, there is really not that much to see. Hangzhou westlake is different. It is beautiful. But in winter, the view is not that great as all the lotus has faded. And you get a fair bit of fog in winter. But you can manage surprising
good photos if you are lucky. When in Hangzhou, remember to dine at Lou Wai Lou (楼外楼
on one of the "islands" on westlake. This restaurant is a few hundred years old. (the building is rebuilt and very modern) and has served food to major foreigner visitors including several American presidents. Wait is horrendously long and no reservation is allowed. When my parents visited me I brought them there. We waited around 1.5 hours before we got a table. Great food. Must try. The Beggar's chicken, DongPo braised meat are among the best you will ever taste. However, if you are not particular about eating the best, there are some good priced restaurants along the older shophouses near Hyatt.
Before you get confused further, there are 2 railway stations. Shanghai Railway Station (上海火车站
in the north, and Shanghai South Railway Station (上海南站
in the south. Both are located along Metro line 1. There are 2 long distance bus stations. One connected with Shanghai Railway Station. The other called Shanghai South Bus station is connected to South Railway station.
If you want to buy computer stuff, go to XuJiaHui Station (Metro Line 1), very near South Railway station. There are a couple of buildings there that are like SLS. One is called METRO(美罗城
and one is TaiPingYang aka BaiNaoHui (百脑汇
. Both are at Metro Line 1, Xujiahui station, Exit 10.
