There are buses to westlake, but I always take a cab as I do not want to handle luggage in a bus. Hangzhou city area is not big. Taxi cab is very cheap compared to singapore.

Lou Wai Lou is not cheap and the wait is horrendous. They do have a lot of buildings nowadays to cater to the crowds but I have not been there recently. I prefer food from cheap small local restaurants. Lou Wai Lou is a one time must go thing, after that, no need to go again.

And if you do take the taxi like Daredevil recommends, you need to get to the taxi stand in front of the train station.

Lou Wai Lou - hope you are not going alone as it will not be easy to order.

If I am not wrong, last order is 1500 at Lou Wai Lou. I reach there around 1430. Phew! :sweatsm:

Singapore only won by clean water and clean air. Other than this 2 factors, Shanghai is a better place to live.. What i can say is in Shanghai there is more "ren qing wei" than in Singapore.

They open for dinner too. They have a rest period between lunch and dinner. If there are important people in town, they will close dinner to the public. Nowadays they have more buildings, so I guess they will close selected buildings.

depends on where you are and what time. It can get nasty. But it is also hard in singapore at peak hours and when it is raining.

Wish to ask you guys if it is possible to book train tickets online before going?

Train tickets cannot be booked online.

And good luck now, it is near CNY, trains will be packed like hell.

oic, then can the train tickets be bought at the Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport the day before my train journey?

Train tickets can only be bought at the train station or at very very limited authorized selling points. Don't think it is available at Xiaoshan airport. Take a cab to the train station and buy the ticket asap when you are in hangzhou city. Try to buy a few days in advance. short distance tickets between HZ and SHA is not so bad.

Thanks Daredevil!

You can also ask if the hotel you are staying in have the service. Some hotels buy train or airplane tickets for their guests. But train tickets are getting less and less.

If buying at the station, You can buy tickets many days in advance. Be sure to allocate time as the train station ticket booths have very very long lines nowadays, as it is near CNY. This is perhaps one of the worst time to travel in china. Even domestic plane tickets are selling out like hotcakes. I was buying plane tickets online last night and every few minutes I see tickets sell out and/or price going up. Plan and buy early. As far as I know many long distance train tickets are already sold out.

If going to shanghai from hangzhou, remember to ask for Bullet train. In chinese it is called "Dong Che Zu" (动车组). Ticket should be around 57 RMB each way per pax. I've posted somewhere a while back but cannot find. So I'll repeat the guide for trains in China:

There are 2 train stations. Shanghai station and Shanghai south station. If going north, Shanghai station (上海火车站)has more trains. If going to Hanghzou, zhejiang or south, Shanghai South station (上海南站)has more trains. When taking a cab to Shanghai South station, the taxi driver will ask you if you are taking train or bus, do not panic, there are 2 sections of the station. Tell the cab driver accordingly and he will drop you off at the right location.

The following is the guide to train numbering in China:

DXXX - DongCheZu 动车组 also called D-ZiTou (D字头), Fastest bullet train. Minimal stops and exceeds 200km/h at max speed. Sells out quickly. Aircon.
TXXX - TeKuaiChe 特快车, minimal stops, quite fast, as fast as 140 km/h at max speed. Aircon.
KXXX - Kuai 快车, despite the name, it is not that fast. Moderate number of stops. Aircon
XXXX - Normal train, many many stops, older train cars, quite slow. Aircon or non-aircon, but non-aircon is getting exceedingly rare.

If you are unable to secure tickets for D trains. try to go for T trains. Thing is, sometimes there are no seating tickets, then ask for bed WoPu(卧扑), May cost a little more but better than the worst, which is Standing Ticket - ZhanPiao (站票). Sometimes, in worst situations, when I was travelling during CNY itself, can only get standing ticket. Then I will go to the ticketing booth in the train itself (ask or listen to the broadcast and note the car #) and you can go upgrade your ticket (BuPiao 补票) there if there are seats available. I have taken 5 hours train standing, it is no joke. We sit on floor, behind doors, between cars, and the whole train is packed body to body. No choice. BTW, bullet trains do not allow standing tickets usually. However I have seen a little recently on longer bullet train rides (esp the changsa to shanghai train).

Hope this helps. You might also want to consider taking long distance buses. Although slightly more expensive, it is usually faster than trains (slower than bullet trains though). I have taken the LD buses extensively and it is my preferred method of travelling within Zhejiang province. If you want info on that, I will be another long post. Let me know.

hi guys,im back from shanghai!

shanghai was quite interesting, things are cheap food are cheap too! A good example of cheap food would be 8 xiaolongbaos for SGD1 lol.And i bought a pair of shoes for SGD8(imitation though) and coloured contacts for 18yuan only, really very cheap.

Regarding the people there,no offense but IMO,singaporeans(or maybe most) are more courteous. juz some actions that gave me a bad impression-1.the people in shanghai do not wait for ppl to get off the train b4 entering it. 2.traffic lights are for show only, nobody obeys dem(however,i find it a joy to cross roads as n when i wan, cars will juz stop for u haha) 3.they spit n litter everywhere they go (im a geographer,so dis kinda turns me off)
A shopkeeper we went to buy our jeans from asked us whether we were from singapore coz we were very friendly,i guess our reputation isnt dat bad after all haha.

However, the people in shanghai is generally very helpful as we asked for directions from them quite often n dey always help us unlike some ppl in singapore. i'll juz say different countries have deir different way of living and culture,n different ppl exist in these countries. One juz have to immerse himself into e country's culture and experience it, dats what travelling is all about isnt it =)

Ok,back to e trip. The French Concession is a great place to go, a much betta Holland V of singapore.Hangzhou was quite interesting as well for sightseeings and definitely worth it. Its better to book train tickets earlier instead of on the day itself. I booked my Shanghai-Hangzhou train tickets around 3days earlier n i still had to settle for a 7.10am train becoz the rest were sold out.The return train ticket was betta as i booked it on the day itself.

Courtesy is very subjective. It does not mean people care.

If a person fall to the ground in singapore, see how many will stop and help. In china, they may not give way in the train, they may fight for seats in the MRT, but when something happens in China, a lot of people will come forward and help.

Just take a look at Sichuan earthquake. The first people to get to the scene and start to send people to hospitals are taxi cabs from Chengdu. On the day of earthquake, taxi cabs in Chengdu are almost all missing, because as soon as the news of earthquake went thru the radio system, more than a thousand taxi cabs are immediately on the highway going towards Wenchuan to save lives. This is the one thing I see missing from Singapore. Funny thing is, cab drivers are sometimes the nastiest people to deal with (especially beijing).

I have been in situations personally where the locals went above and beyond to help without asking for anything back. And when I offer monetary gratitude, they refused. Only when I offer alcohol or food will they accept. These are usually the heartlanders, where many of us foreign people "see them no up". There are bad eggs no doubt, but people in China have a lot of heart and also pride in themselves. When I lived in Shanghai, one of my favorite things to do is to sit by the roadside eating BBQ from a bicycle BBQ store (unlicensed and illegal), drinking 2.50 RMB beer and talking to the BBQ guy, the owner of the small provision shop, the internet cafe and the security guards. Learnt a lot and experience the culture. damn, I am a china man now. Ah... that's life!
