Shanghai Trip

i bringing my diana mini there too..hope can get 2 film back at least...

by e way, i used to hear the china ppl are still v rough and ermmm impolite....

is there any improvement now? any do and don't? i heard don bargain if u are not genuine abt buying the tings.

I find singaporeans to be more impolite. :bsmilie:

But yea, they are still a little rough.

Do use your common sense. Don't do or say things without thinking of the possible consequences.

this is a great thread! what is the best way to go to hang zhou and from which station?

Have fun. Actually shanghai hotels can always cancel. Shouldn't be a problem. And hotels right by the water of Westlake is quite cheap if you know where to look. :bsmilie:

hey daredevil, do you have any recommendations of cheap and good hotels by the lake? ;p

I like to stay in HuaQiao Hotel "杭州华侨饭店“ http://www.allybook.com/hotelinfo.asp?hotel_id=310043

Although a little old, it is facing the water on the east shore of Westlake. From the hotel you can walk northbound along the water and do the westlake tour on foot. Service is also good. After check in, the floor staff will serve tea and biscuits. Rooms are spacious. There is a 24hr mini mart in the same building. It is also right by grand Hyatt and on the street between hyatt and this hotel, there are quite a number of good priced restaurants with good food. It is also walking distance to shopping, fine dinning. Right infront of the hotel is also a bus stop where you can alight (number K-2 I think), The bus starts at Linying temple (one of the attractions), will pass by (and stop) at YueFei temple and at this stop. Cost 2-3 RMB per pax. So it is very very convenient. The hotel room is around 380 RMB a night for a standard room (2 single beds). If you want the lake view, it will be around 450 RMB. Prices do fluctuate a little across seasons.

If you want cheaper hotels you can also check out http://www.ctrip.com, a chinese booking site where most of us use.

Do you mean "the Barn" or "The Bund" in Shanghai? Very different.

This is the "Barn" : http://base.googlehosted.com/base_media?q=maps:host:mapabc:0l2e2008100500001814.jpg&size=1&hl=en

sorry bro..the bund...haha, cos i heard my colleague mentioning but just spell out the places in my own spelling

Just came back today from Shanghai, construction going on everywhere in shanghai for the upcoming Expo 2010, dusty and polluted. This is what u can see from the Bund.:(

Yup, the waterside walkway along the Bund on the Puxi side is now closed for remodeling. The new and improved waterside area will be open prior to World Expo 2010.

If you want a good view of things, go to the Pudong side and right by Super Brand Mall and Shangrila hotel you will find BinJiangDaDao (滨江大道), which in my opinion is nicer to hang out and more enjoyable. I use to hang out at the outdoor area of starbucks daily at one point in time (yes even in winter).

i still cant decide which watertown to go! ill be gg for e day trip from shanghai, any opinions?? most value-for-money/least crowded/good food etc. lol. i noe dere were some discussions abt e watertowns in the earlier posts but it didn't help me made up my mind haha.

you can book the tickets through your hotel. it starts at 730pm and ends at 830pm. cheapest tickets at 220 yuan. i have seen his other impression works at lijiang and i have to say the one at hangzhou is most impressive.

Hi there, :D

I went to shanghai & hangzhou less than a year ago

People in China seems to talk slightly louder, spit more & almost won't say 'excuse me' when they sneeze or spit. Personally, I think it's a cultural difference, not really impolite though I can't get used to it in the 1st few days

Generally, if you don't speak their language(for my experience for Hangzhou & Shanghai..), they tend to 'chop' you. Try to bargain & sound off before buying anything, walk away if it's much higher than your budget, they'll call you back & ask you how much can you offer. Then quote your price.

If you are going to Shanghai, go near the Pearl of the Orient (near the river, not inside the Pearl... ) during night time (too hazy during day:( )with a tripod, great view by the river!

Just my point of view!

I have stayed at the HuaQiao Hotel among other places in Hangzhou. I like it because it is not only convenient but it has a certain atmosphere not found in the newer lodgings. At the north side of the building , around the corner, used to be a restaurent called Banana Leaf with a poor copy of prata. Imitation of the restaurant chain in Guangzhou but have to try harder. But it is popular nevertheless. Now is too cold to really enjoy West Lake.

I like HuaQiao too. It is the first hotel I'll book if I am going to be staying in Hangzhou.

The banana leaf restaurant is part of the same chain as the banana leaf in Shanghai (in raffles sq and xu jia hui). Never liked their food. It was popular in Shanghai for a while because the locals there didn't know better. LOL. I usually get my singapore food fix at the singaporean owned "Frankie's" in Shanghai. Food is good there, and Frankie is a good friend too!

higuys, i am writing here from shanghai...there are so much difference in the ppl and culture here...i believe those who travel here last yr and this yr would see huge difference..i didnt experience any unpleasant event with the locals....n seriously like daredevil said..some singaporeans behaved even more snobbish..spotted afew...

its v cold here...i have been thru, shanghai, zhou zhuang, suzhou, nanjing, wuxi and hangzhou n now back to shanghai...wuxi is v much like singapore...but v pleasant..maybe becos of the weather...i felt it is abit like australia and new zealand..v serenity...
peaceful..the onli city u don see alot of jam and cars and ppl...on the streets..a good place to migrate to..haha

hangzhou was a little pity w the itinery...onli go the xihu for a while..n didnt manage to visit any other spots like those temples etc....

its winter here...missed the snow in nanjing by abit...sunny day now..no more rain...but still pretty cold when the wind blows....glows etc are not enough..unless u are like me, who can brave the cold and get all numb w my camera on me..:)
no need tripod if u r w a tour grp...wont get the chance to use it..esp in such weather...bring more heat pack...esp the feet one..once ur feet is warm..u wont tremble as much..another 1 day n i be back in SG...yup rem to bring extra batts along..it depletes ur batt quite fast...esp when u shoot n shoot...
