seeing how the prices are coming down, i would have another idea IF i were the product planning person in nikon. theoretically speaking, it would be like this:

add: D3x (18 or 20+mp) using the newly developed sony sensor. cam3500 also. $11~12k?
D3 (12mp) -> price should reach S$6+k by early/mid 2009? still the most droolable throughout 2008/09/early 2010.
D300 (12mp) still hover above $2k up till end 2008.
add: D80x (12mp) (same sensor/similar features as D300 w/o sealing, in the same vein as D80/D200) cam3500 or a new cam?? without group AF. It won't be a D90 as price gap between D300 and D80 is not enought to spawn another series. should be cheap to develop. same many components.
add?: D60x (10mp) same sensor as D80/D60/D40 but w 5 pt AF (like that of D70/s). *Also might not happen as they can continue to sell D80 to the D40/60 upgraders, which is a very capable camera in many aspects.
D60 (10mp) just released right? it's a beefed up version of D40x.

ignore this ideas if you find it crazy. anyway, in the real world many things don't happen expected or as per theory right? hehe..
but i trust some might agree this is a logical setup to milk all segments of the market and still run the production capacity of plants at high utilization very rate. The nikon factory in Japan can apparently produce more cams if they redesign some parts/processess.
Canon uses a lot of snap-on parts while nikon is still traditional screws n bolts in their approach in the assembly/design of cams (which is very good quality/durable but more costly).

ok, end of my tok rot session now. :)

I am waiting for the D80 replacement and hopefully its kit lens is 16-85mm VR :)

My D70 is getting old. It is starting to have write errors every now and then :confused:

the D80 is very reasonably priced now. you should get it, or even better the D300.
16-85mm VR as kit lens? don't reckon that would happen for now. it's range is quite a well designed list price is close to a thousand.
but you might get it cheaper in packaged offers.

1 prob, too many cameras that will prob cannibalize each other and hurt themselves.

now is a matter of old stock.

Current lineup is D60, D80, D300 and D3. 4 cams.

Both are OOP. Still can get new somewhere but then they are no longer rolling out from the factories.

But they're still in the 2008 DSLR lineup in the Coolpix brochure.

They wont be around next year.

means from the line, only D80 havent got replacement...

:cool:

Surprisingly, the D80 replacement has not been released yet

after D80....then D90... then D100 again ;)

it is quite interesting to see them having to shift in between the D80 to D100 naming constraint.
i like to imagine, and so for the sake of fun, i'll speculate it to be like this D80->D80x or D90.
Or else go to D81, D82 etc.. in order to max out the running number models.

D1, D2, D3 -> D3x/D4 lots of room also...D9?
D100, D200, D300 -> D400... lots of room still...D900?
D70, D80 -> D81, D82 etc...lots of room... D90?
D40, D40x, D60 -> D61, D62 etc..lots of room...D68? heheh

anyone has a time machine? can you go check out the names in the future and let us know?
sign... yet another precious moment wasted on worrying about the model names instead of shooting nice pics. :P

Look in the past to tell the future.. F501, F601, F801, F65, F75, F90, F100....

if someone has a time machine, all you want are the names of the models of the future?...;p:bsmilie:

Okie...

Let's not let our imagination run wild about time machine and make this thread into a kopitiam.

Anyway, full frame prosumer DSLR cannot be dismissed (though I did not believe the rumours earlier this year). My guess is probably year end for both the prosumer and the D3x to make an appearance, unless my crystal ball kenna fungus or cracked.

The lastet PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED and AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED are just the beginning of more exciting new lenses that are coming onbaord this year. This is something many will look forward to. :bigeyes:

So start saving up and do not waste your energy, time, effort and more importantly $$$ looking for time machine or even switching system etc.;)

**disclaimer: These are just my estimates and so how true is it, your guess is as good as mind ;p :think: I will not be responsible for any death due to starvation, consumption of bread and water, divorce etc etc :cool:
