<Preview> Olympus mZD 40-150mm F2.8

Hi

I beg to differ. US retail USd 1499 already include shipping, shop mark up etc. U don't see it sell higher than USD 1499 right? Some more ship from China to USA should be more than to Spore. So plus GST, it should be around $2k and that's it. The profit margin already built in liao. If not shop in Japan can sell at Yen 144,000 close shop oredi.

assuming exchange rate is 1.3 = US$1,499 x 1.3 = S$1,950
add in GST @ 7% = S$1,950 x 1.07 = S$2,087
add in shipping cost and local shop rental = S$2,300

It won't be overly priced. Olympus's track record for past few releases has been quite reasonable. Remember 12-40/2.8 at around $11xx street when released?

Yep cant wait hehe

Oh ya.... they always sell few tens cheaper than Panny.... what price is Panny 12-35 now?? Less few tens..... kekeke

This is very exciting. I hope to get it at Japan in January when I go for vacation.

Is it worth to get with teleconverter? Or I just get a second hand down the road if really need?

May I interest you in this clip: (21:30 onwards)

It seems like f2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range is PHYSICALLY impossible since aperture is calculated with the formula:

focal length/barrel (or front element?) diameter

focal length changes, but the diameter doesn't. How can aperture stay constant? The Pana 35-100 f2.8 is essentially (in 35mm format) 70-200mm f5.6. Don't know how true it is with this Oly lens..

You're assuming that the entire physical front element is used throughout, which is not the case. Constant aperture zooms are created by varying the focal length and the amount of front element used. The size of the front element is sized to be "as large as needed for the entire focal length". So for example, if 150mm needs a 72mm glasss element to get f/2.8, but the 40mm end needed only a 60mm glass element to get f/2.8.. they build the glass with a 72mm front glass element instead. The internals will ensure proper focus throughout.

Non-fixed aperture zooms do it the other way around, use the smallest glass elemented needed to achieve the focal lengths.

The Pana 35-100 f2.8 (in 35mm format) is 70-200mm f5.6, and Oly 40-150mm f2.8 is 80-300mm f/5.6 for the sake of BOKEH/Depth of field only. For the sake of light gathering your formula is correct and aperture stays constant, and its f/2.8 for light gathering ! So the Oly at 150mm f/2.8 shoots at the same shutter/iso/aperture as a full frame/medium format camera for the same exposure.

feel like selling off my 75mm 1.8 + 42.5mm nocticron to buy this lens.. hmmm....

If u need this focal length, this is prob the best value lens now even though the price tag is USD 1499.
Compare to FF f2.8 zoom, the size is actually manageable. Oly is famous for making great lenses for digital sensor, just look at the SHG lenses.
I was abt the pull the plug and get the 150mm f2.0 and glad I did not. Now it looks like the 40-150 f2.8 outperformed the 150 f2.0 in some aspect (don't like to say all aspect cos I never use the lens be4).
But remember the lens is relatively BIG and on the EP5, not too sure if it will be únbalance'.
That said, this is prob the most exciting product for m43 this year.

So sad. Wrote to Olympus Singapore's facebook page about the availability and price of this lens... and they basically tell me, they don't know.

Can't expect them to know everything right? Relax and chill, it'll come when it comes, we've all survives without the lens till now, I'm sure we'll all still be living till the day the lens arrive

Best to wait a couple of months after it hits the market before getting it. Nocticron is selling at $19XX now when the original release price just a couple of months ago was $25XX

Was it that high in Sg? I bought it back then was also $19XX early this year.

It won't be balanced on ep5, even on EM10 with grip becomes a strain after an hour use. EP5 has no grip so thats worse. U can probably find 3rd party grip but you would be stretching the limits.

Can always do 3D printing and DIY assemble a grip? Hahaha, EH?! Why didn't I think of that for the E-M1? Lol

Don't. Consider if u need the 40-150/2.8 first , if yes and u must sell something , probably the 75/1.8 haha
