OFFICIAL: CANON EOS 6D - User Thread - Part 3

Hi all,

I will be getting my 6D from HK. Now I need lens to go with it.
For daily use, should I go for Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS EF USM AF Lens? What do you suggest?

Thanks.

Yes. 24-105 range and F4 is very good enough for daily use.
Unless u shoot really small objects or very far subjects.

I've bought most of my lenses from Hong Kong when I used to live there. Be sure to go to the reputable shops in Mong Kok and stay away from the sharks on Nathan Road.

I also use the 24-105 f/4L IS and have been very happy with it. Highly recommended for a general walk around lens that produces sharp photos.

If you need something with better low light capability, there are 3 excellent alternatives:

i) Canon 24-70 f/28L II
ii) Canon 24-70 f/4
iii) Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC

Hi guys, need your opinion as I'm planning my next DSLR.
At first I thought of waiting for the EOS 70D but on second thought I rather get a FF camera instead of aps-c.
Primary reason is the lens that FF camera can use without the crop factor.
Of course, the price as after I calculate I rather get a Canon EOS 6D with Canon 24-105mm lens instead of Canon EOS 70D with EF-S 17-55mm F2.8.
Problem is that I know that Canon EOS 6D has only 11 AF points and review said that it is not meant for sports photography.
So far how guys feel about the EOS 6D especially the 11 AF points and is it that slow for sports photography?

I normally shoot:
Landscape
Night
People
Macro (Food)

Should I pump in more cash for 5D mark iii just for more robust 61 AF point?

The 6D is not so suitable for sports photography. You can, but you probably won't get as many keepers as with the 5D3. Note the 6D fps is about 4 vs 7 for the 5D3. So I would plonk down more $$ for the 5D3 if its important to nail those action shots when the time comes.

Gosh, that means need to pump it more cash for 5D3.

If u are making money out of it, then do get the 5D3. Otherwise, 6D should do just fine. Just have to stick to the center AF. Low keepers doesnt mean no keepers.

Gosh, that means need to pump it more cash for 5D3.

Based on your needs, in my opinion, the 6D should do just fine. Those odd times when you need to shoot action, just use the centre focus point on the 6D or rent a faster camera.

My photography preferences are much like yours but when I bought my 5D3, the 6D did not exist. If it did, I would have seriously considered it.

Prior to owning the 5D3, I had a 5D classic and 7D. Due to my shooting needs and preferences I used the 5D classic far more than the 7D.

Gosh, that means need to pump it more cash for 5D3.

Not a must unless sports genre is your bread n butter. 6D can do the job, just a bit more challenging.

Thanks guys, probably I wil get the 6D. Will use the centre AF point for fast action just like how I shoot marco.
Lens wise what you do use?
For me, I'm considering:

General purpose: Canon 24-105mm F4 (Kit lens)
Marco: Canon 100mm f2.8L IS F2.8
Prime lens: Canon 85mm f1.8 (For portrait and street photography)
Telephoto: No idea can recommend
Wide: EF17-40mm f/4L USM

I will probable get the Marco and prime lens first than telephoto as I know a good telephoto lens is expensive.

Excellent choice of lenses! When you're ready to buy a telephoto I would highly recommended either:

i) 70-200 f/4L IS
ii) 70-200 f/2.8L IS II

70-200 f/4L IS, probably will get this one instead. Just curious why is there very few who using EF28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM lens?

The 28-300L is a big and heavy lens. Not fun to lug around as a general walk-about lens. And the big focal range means some inevitable compromises in the IQ.

I c so it's like holding a big cannon around. :bsmilie:

EOS app 1.1.0.0 is available for update to work with the new EOS 70D

I heard the 28-300 is like 1.6kg? Anyway I converted to 6D two weeks ago :)
I already have a telephoto lens, now I am considering the standard zoom or the wide angle zoom... 6D wifi is really fun... My friends was amazed that I could send out the picture so fast... I have tried the 24-70 F4, I can say that for the weight, the macro the short chassis of the lens, it might be a lens that I will consider but not in the near future...

Go for 16-35!

Alot has been said about the center cross type AF being excellent, how has the 5D2 upgraders to 6D find the AF system when all AF points are ON?

6D distortion control - does it correct the bad distortion at 24mm for 24-105mm well? And other wide angle lenses?

Distortion is corrected in LR post. Peripheral illumination is corrected in-camera if the lens model is downloaded to the body via EOS utility.
