Hi catchlights,

Cokin has their own IR filter. Its a relatively new product so you probably wouldnt have heard of it. I didn't too until an alert friend of mine who happens to be a fan of Cokin filters alerted me. I checked their website and its listed there under their 'new' products.

Could I ask how much it would set me back for the 77m adaptor and ring?

Any pointers are more than welcome. :)
Sorry John, I don't understand what you mean. But for what I know P adapter do accept 77mm ring, but the P adapter is not suitable for wide angle lens with a 77mm filter size, my 87 gelatin filter is 3”(75mm), with the gelatin holder don’t think can work with 77mm lens also, may cause vignetting.
I’m using 18-70mm lens, filter size is 67mm, I just hold it in front of the lens while making exposure, it works fine.
Why I’m using 87 gelatin filter is because that’s the cheapest method at that time.

tomcat - any post processing done on that picture? Handheld 1/10sec, very steady hands.

One question - you're shooting thru' infrared filter, and you switched on an infrared heat lamp on the cat. Would this not cancel each other to some extent, depending on the spectrum of the lamp and the filter and render the picture as a normal shot. Just my thoughts, no experience on this. Please enlighten.

Thanks

The Coolpix 950 is actually not sensitive enough to be used indoors for IR photography and will show a black screen when the R72 filter is attached. The R72 filter is supposed to cut off almost all the visible parts of the spectrum but allows near IR and IR to pass through. The light from the heat lamp is supposed to contain an abundance of IR radiation which when shone and reflected off the subject will be picked up by the sensor of the Coolpix 950 to give an image. So when the IR lamp was switched on, immediately, there was a viewable image on the LCD display.

The Coolpix 950 is quite sensitive to IR but does not give a very colourful IR image even in bright sunlight outdoors. The IR heat lamp gives off a very red light essentially drowning out all other colours and the IR image recorded by the Coolpix under its illumination is even more B&W. I think a normal 100W incandescent might give a more colourful IR image with this camera but I don't have one at home, hence the use of the heat lamp for this test.

Because there wasn't much colours in the first place, I did not do a channel swap for this pic. I did try, but the effect did not have as much impact and I liked the former better. The other steps were the usual ones like unsharpen, curves, colour cast removal, shadow/highlight corrections and increased colour saturation.

I'm using 87 Lee filter, with Cokin P Gelatin filter holder, bought it from Cathay long long time ago, don’t know still available or not, Cokin have own IR filter meh? Do you know how much is the P size?

I bought from Cathay not long ago an IR square resin filter, think its from Cokin, about $40.00, but sold away cos the effect is not as strong or for me to say, not as good as Hoya R72's effect, no doubt its equ to R72 wavelenght. For me its more like very deep red of Wratten 25 A. Think still have stock.

Welcome home brother, so finally have the time to post your shots huh? Don't worry, you don't have to take any extras, just buy a round of drinks for all on our next shoot.

Hey those shots are  and ya, it's not easy have a photographer boy friend. I know, 'cos that's what I did to my wife when we were dating. :bsmilie:

just went down cathay this afternoon, they don't have cokin P 89B (no stock).

anyone using any other 89B IR filters? what's the effect like?

do you concur with IRMan's statement that it is unsuitable? (cos that's the only option i have considering sigma 12-24 is 82mm filter size.. )

Cokin 007 is a Wratten Rating 89B filter which is the same rating as the Hoya R72 filter. Most of us are using Hoya R72, so unless Cokin's quality control is really so bad, the 007 filter should be suitable for use.

As the 007 filter is a relatively new item, perhaps IRMan was referring to the Cokin 003 which has a Wratten Rating of 25, deep red in colour and is the lightest (as in 'not dark') to be useable for Near IR photography. :dunno:

Hey guys, need some help.
When I did a conversion @ RGB mode, I am able to save as Jpeg file.

But when I switch to "lab "mode which I was told is better for B & W, I could only either save as tiff of Photoshop file but not Jpeg?

Can anyone tell me why and how can I save it as Jpeg when I do my conversion by using the " Lab" Mode.
Thanks

Hi tomcat,

Thanks for the information! I just called up Cathy Peninsula and they said they don't have the Cokin 007 89B IR Filter in stock. The reason why its called 007 is just because its listed as number 007 under the Cokin catalouge. The 'model' number of it is actually 89B IR as listed on the site for those confused. :)

Cathy says it will receive stock in mid December for this filter. Didn't ask how much though. The ring and adaptor will cost $40++ according to her.

:edit:
Oh btw, I cannot wait for their stock to arrive in mid December as I will be flying off to Japan on the 4th. I have decided to buy the ring and adaptor from them and probably purchase the filter from a web site. Anyone knows which site to order from?

Hello, I realy like "Walkway, Hut and Maiden" very nice !

May I ask what exposure time you used on each of those

Thanks.

Oh yes, what lens (no hot spot !!!)

Thanks Pablo, Hosea and Teerex for the  . Will still try to improve more.

BTW, My Exposure is 30s f8.0 ISO 400
Set under Custom Function 02 (Noise Reduction - ON)
Using the Kit lens from my EOS 300.
28-90mm f: 1/4-5.6

There are some slight Hotspot for some of the Pix. I burned them in. ;)

Oh ! very interesting ! ...30s... (poor girl :bsmilie: ) I have been concerned at having long exposure
times and have tried to keep it down. Hence my sad attempts.
I will try setting up just as you say and see what I can do.
I think I remember some discusions back that teerex used handheld for one of his shots, which was great from what I saw.
Since then I have often thought, "why do I need to have such a long exposure time", what am I doing that is wrong :dunno:

Now I feel better about it. So were all the recent posts by the others taken by them with such exposure times ????

Oh, one final question. How do you stop the wind from blowing ?
I know you guys are GOOD but does owning a D70 or a 20D give THAT POWER!! :bsmilie:

Of the 2 cameras, only the D70 can stop the wind from blowing. The 20D on the other hand can stop a girl from moving... but only if she likes you. ;)

For Teerex and Dennis (D70 users) they are able to shoot handheld....a rather fast exposure (1/15 - 1/30??)

For Irman (Sony DSC-828) Best!! Shoot Handheld and is not 'Blinded'

PandaOng (20D) no tripod = no picture.

Btw guys, I have try to shoot with Auto setting (Black Picture). then went back to PS (Auto Level). Guess what?? Result Negative. Still OrR OrR.
Can you confirm the result Max?
