Having Fun with Shooting Film

my turn to show my film shots! :D

mostly with Phenix 50/1.7 and K 55/2, on Pentax P3n.
I used some cheap ass film, and it wasn't up to my expectations. It's not sharp at all, bleagh. But I think it's cause I shoot wide open for most shot. Hahaha.

The framing looks like it's overlapping, did you use multiple exposure?

is it difficult to self-develop? I've always wanted to develop it myself, but I don't have a dark enough room. Hahaha.
for developing black and white film, all u need is a developing tank and dark bag (you can use jacket also). You'll only need a darkroom when you want to do your own printing from the negative
http://www.chiifcameras.com/site2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=63&Itemid=63

for chemical stuffs, the cheapest I could find is microMF (developer) and acifix (fixer), each is only $1.1. I box can make 1 litre of working solution (can develop up to 4-6 rolls). I have several boxes lying on my cabinet.

You can even use coffee to develop your film: http://caffenol.blogspot.com/

It's really fun :)

I opened the back of the camera to try to create lightleaks, then winded some of the film back so I can expose the film twice. Turns out the lightleaks didn't work out. I guess I really need to open the back of the camera under direct sunlight! :o Hahaha.

Sorry, this might be a somewhat noob question. I read from the various threads mentioned in this Pentax forum of having the photos scanned into a CD from developed film and also from negatives.

Thus, does this means that if I have negatives from many years back, I can actually get this scanned into photos and stored in a CD.

Are there shops providing this services or do you need to get a scanner yourself to do it?

i think most photolabs can help u scan the negatives...i got my film developed at shalom colors at bras basah and they help to scan..

I have not shot 35mm film for a long time.
A recent working trip gave me that opportunity as I did not want to bring an expensive camera due to unknown crime concerns.
The theory was that if someone robbed me of my camera, my MZ-5n and 50/2 cost no more than $200+.

Loaded the camera with Kodak Gold 400; A film I've never liked on prints before I shot digital.
..... still don't think I like Kodak Gold too much..... (maybe its already expired from the shop in AMK where I got it)

anyway.... some photos of Ipoh old town

Can help but ask, how did you control DA* with MZ-S? DA got no aperture ring right?

IIRC, MZ-S can control aperture on camera body.
Some of the older models before that use the old school way of turning aperture ring, even in Av mode (Eg. Mz-5; Mz-3)

My adventures delving into film started about 5 months ago when i acquired a Super Program from Oceanpriest and since then, i had acquired another 3 more Pentax film SLR bodies from my fellow CS Pentaxians. The funny part is that whilst the CBA was hitting me hard, i have only managed to completely shoot 3 roles of film so far. The thing i like about film is that there are no excuses. And every shot (especially the bad ones) becomes a learning experience. I've had funny incidents with film developing and it all had to do with the confusion of what i wanted. The 1st roll (Kodak Gold 200) i gave the instruction to "develop and print" and forgot to tell them to scan. When i found out it would cost me extra to scan after it had been developed, i said 'no thanks'! The second time i had 2 more rolls to develop and i then told them to "develop and scan" (thinking develop would automatically mean they will print) but they didn't. So i asked them to print after picking it up and it cost me more again!

Well enough of my story, here is one shot i would like to share.

It was taken with an MX and a 43 Limited. Fuji Superia 200 film.

I must say i'm seriously hooked on film now (even though it can get frustrating but that's part of the learning process innit?)!

Odd enough, MZ-S still use the aperture ring unlike MZ-5. I guess can use Tv to stop down metering.

The color seems a bit bluish. Is that kodak ultramax 400 or kodak gold 400?

I use kodak ultramax 400, and it gives me warm color. Here're some shots taken with mju ii. Sorry don't have any sample from this film taken with pentax camera.

Might be that the film is expired or poorly stored. Can't see any date printed on the box. The blue cast is on a previous roll as well.
In fact the cast was worse than what you see now. I had to do some color correction.

Anyway, I've decided to just use the last roll as a capture medium and convert it to B/W.

I relooked at my Kodak film box, its not GOLD but Ultramax 400.

How do you find the Lucky SHD100?
It seems less contrasty from your photo or maybe its the development?
Been thinking of trying it (cause its cheap) but have been holding off as ISO100 is not as versatile as 200 or 400.

It could be my development. For that roll, I forgot to pour out the prewash-water out before putting the developer into the tank

But it seems the film itself is less contrasty, from what I see on other reviews. It also 'glows' because it lacks of anti halation layer.

Not to mention lucky film is very curly and hard to keep flat, even after hanging it 24 hours.

So, I decided to get almost expired fomapan 100 instead, the price is about the same.

The tones on the Fomapan 100 sure looks nice.

hi all where do you guys buy your black and white film from these days? called cathay and ruby and prices have increased to quite a ridiculous level (eg $9 for a roll of TMax 400, used to be in the $5-6 range) and stocks are hard to find. been trying to find a roll of ilford hp5+ to try.

Yes, it's worth the trouble if you shoot mostly b&w ;)

There's new bulk loader available at freestylephoto, the price is around S$35. I got my bulk loaders from ebay, old model and 2nd hand ones, for half the price.

It's very easy to use. All you need is empty film canister. Those from lucky SHD 100 are the easiest to open, can use bare hand to open.
film_opened.jpg

IIRC Tri-x 400 100 feet is around $70 (at Ruby), can have around 16-17 rolls. That's only $4 per roll, compared to $8-9 sold at Ruby. Even if you put the bulk loader and tape and scissors into cost, it's still cheaper :bsmilie:

Fomapan 100 Short Date 100 feet is only $23. That's about $1.4 per roll. Cheaper than lucky SHD film.
