Probably share this here as well.

I've always been curious on doing a flatbed scanner vs DSLR scan comparison.
I've done a previous round, but it was a bit slip-shod to share here, but I did see some difference btwn the two.
There is some patchy evidence on the internet that shows that a DSLR 'scan' is faster and 'cheaper' than going out to buy a flat bed scanner like the Canon 9000F which is able to scan 35mm film.
Of course this is provided that one owns a DSLR in the first place.

I made a make shift holder for a strip of negative, placed a white sheet of paper behind it and shone 2 table lamps on the paper to provide a even white light source. Placed the DSLR on tripod in front of the negative with a 100mm macro set at f8 and took a shot.

Colors aren't anything to shout about and my lousy rig attracted a lot of dust on the negative.
But to me the difference in detail between flatbed and DSLR 'scan' is shocking

Am I missing something here? (Eg. Scanner not setup properly)
Before anyone shrugs off the 9000F, its supposed to be comparable to V500 or V600.

hi pinholecam, please do more testing/sharing regarding this. very interested to find out more.

your dslr image is direct from RAW conversion without any sharpening?

for your 9000f you use the default program to scan? scanning at how many dpi?

did you try silverfast or vuescan? (i read that if setup correctly they will give optimised results)

i wonder if a K-r + kit lens will be able to scan better than a flatbed scanner? the K-5 + 100mm marco is on another level as compared to a K-r + kit lens

@pinholecam

how to remove orange cast? when I invert the image, it becomes blue

100% crop

k-x + macro lens at f8

v600

later I will try again with proper setup. It seems my current setup, the focal plane is not aligned yet :bsmilie:

the dslr 'scan' looks promising

Will certainly do more trials.
Its jpeg. Raw might have been better to correct color cast, but I think its easier on b/w.
There was a 1pt, 100% sharpen, but the scanner one had even more 2pt.
I am just trying to see it as a best possible final result situation.

No special software. I don't think the silver fast examples I have seen on the net has so big a difference.

Scanner on 1600dpi. I have tried enough times to determine that higher res above it does not get any more details for 35mm film

Edit : Add on

Kr + Kit lens should be fine at f8. Only thing is the need to fill up the frame (ie. go near enough). So maybe you will need an extension tube.
Of course with AF lens, its very convinient. Just press AF, and shoot.

I just did an auto level on scanned negative. After that I inverted colors.
Still got a cast, may try using RAW then use grey/white scale picker tool for WB and point it at something I think was 'white' (eg. clouds)

Yeah, to me, the detail captured is big difference from scanner. Faster too.

Just acquired a Pentax Spotmatic F with a SMC Tak 50 1.4, S-M-C Tak 35 3.5 for less than a month and like it very much. It is really a joy to use it with any S-M-C lens because you do not need to stop down to meter and it is just so smooth. Some of photos I have taken with it recently.

hi all, having shot a few rolls with my MZ-30, i'm pretty happy with it but thinking of getting an "upgrade". I love everything about it but i do wish for 2 more functions: more than 1 auto focus point (for off center shooting) and spot metering (for tricky lighting situations).

does anyone has any recommendations that fits my requirements? (i dont have much knowledge on pentax AF film bodies) the MZ-S is great but wayyyy out of my budget. I shoot on the fa77 all the time on film so i was thinking of getting a body with a bit more controls to bring out the best of the fa77.

not looking for manual film camera like the MX/ME/LX, i strongly prefer AF even for film. aperture priority mode and AF is a must for me.

thanks all in advance!

considering this also since it is the last film body so i guess the AF system is the most advanced? wow the lcd screen on the back, can imagine after a shot my friends asking to playback and show the image lol.

on a serious note, haven seen one for sale on clubsnap and a search on ebay and keh shows nothing. any idea where to look to my hands on one a *ist?

damn nice and sharp! Lovely set!

here's a few from using K55, mostly shot wide open. On Superia 800. Grainy grainy but quite nice.

hi how did you develop tri-x push from 400 to 1600? i tried pushing from 400 to 1600 but i lost a lot of shadow details unlike yours.
