First Impressions : Nikon D800

as per DP REVIEW:

" But there are potential downsides, too. The D3X, Nikon's current flagship, makes very high demands on lenses at 'only' 24MP and we wouldn't be surprised if some of the optics which D700 owners love so much don't shine quite so brightly at 100% on screen when bolted on front of a 36.3MP sensor... "

what does this mean?

Definitely not D700. D800 if ISO at 6400 is good, D4 if otherwise. D800E... Well, let's see some samples and get to know the local price diff of the 2 D800 models first...

The main key is the AF sensor is the same as D4 and the shrunk size makes it similar to pair with my D300s. But the ISO is the thing I worried most. I want FX body mainly becos of this.

How abt u bro?

leaning towards D800. D700 is no longer an option. I'm glad I waited ;)

More like, lenses that you thought were "very sharp" are not that sharp anymore, when used on a 36MP cam.

for this camera you need to remember that this is a 36.3MP file, so stuff that you were too small to see on a 12MP file now is visible
but because this is a 36.3MP file, now you can also see new details in your image that you could not see before
more details also means more sharpness

i believe that this is just the start and in a year or two, the other manufacturers will follow suit and 36.3MP will not look so huge anymore.
in technology, always look forward

but again i reserve judgement on IQ to after i have personally taken some shots with the camera

Some new goodies - wedding shoot situation sample shoots. Yah file size is bigger but then tonal and details are also more. I think the ball game may change from here. If semi pro body surge to above 24MP - then if you shoot it right the results from a 12 or 16MP is not going to be the same. Downside is new computer (for horsepower) and more more ram and hard disk space. In a sense it become like the days of MF vs 35mm for wedding - the pro's used MF which cost more to own and shoot with, the non pros used 35mm; prints could show the difference from the 2 systems. Then 35mm started to catch up on IQ and today there are differences but because the base line for 35mm is gone up these are much smaller. However with more increase in abilities now even entry level cameras are capable in P mode to do 80% of what a base line pro does. So where does that leave a base line pro ? Either move up in camera capabilities. improve on ability to light and create shoot situations and really learn PS to create a look that out of box shooter can get. Enter this new level of camera bodies (Cannon looks like it is going to push out a large than 5D mark2 MP body) where while camera generates a high MP- shooting with it need additional skills. If you cannot work the camera and shooting P mode like hood you can not get the difference this gives over older generation on bodies. Ahh I stand corrected - with the new face recognition feature when it works narrows down the ability need to prejudge how much compensation you need for a face in back lit shoots - dang uncle bob may win if he shoots with a D800 and shoot with a D700 or lower when I misjudge this in a one shot who wins situation. So back to better light control, better PS to make a difference.

Any ideas when the D800 & D800E bodies will be available for testing at NSC?

Or will there be a kopi session coming up for some serious molestations of these bodies, D4 and AF-S 85mm/1.8G?

I'm more keen to test them at NSC - more peace and quiet, no need to rush, with only friendly (and Poisonous) Marcus to talk to. :)

the more i see the more i like
again, it is useless to resist, give in to the dark side

you know you want to ...

Wonderful camera..make me envy and hopeful that canon 5D MK III has answer to it.

i guess Canon will have a hard time this time.. even if they come out with 36mp camera sensor, they still need to come out with lenses that can resolve, somehow my limited understanding is that no lenses in the world can do that now.. some say Zesis can, but they are manual focus..

i still remember reading some Canon entry level dslr review on dpreview 2 years ago, and they say the sensor are out resolving the lenses.. hope they only mean kit lenses.. haha...

Thanks for posting this -- very informative but poisonous :)

Just one quick question -- is the body made in Japan? Not that it matters very much nowadays, but just curious. Thks
