First Impressions : Nikon D800

Smile after looking at sample video, some of the sample pictures - it seems an impressive little beastie given the sheer MP size of it. Now for Nikon users one can shoot a little loose and tighten up of post process cropping with a 12MP camera that was a little iffy. Gosh I had forgotten what it was like to be excited about a new body - it's a nice feel to experience again. The only big question is how is the grain texture feel like - is it like a D3s ? Is it like a D700 ? If it like a D7000 oh boy that hurts.

Need to see raw files to really understand what it really can do. Of course how much it is going to sold in here would be interesting - if its US2999 pre order it may mean around 4.3K sing dollar upwards. Ahh what was the last new price of a D700 ? 3.3K ?

My impression there, looking at the images taken at ISO 3200 is that it can be use for commercials. ISO 6400 is a maybe ? for commercials. But for lesser demanding jobs it is not an issue.

I would not compare it to D3s, for the simple reason it is comparing apple to orange. One is 36mp and one is 12mp, for a D3s to have good clean images at 6400 is a non issue afterall it is only 12mp.

Thanks for ur response, I was trying to see how well D800 fare in the ISO department in terms of noise against D3s at the same ISO level. Or how worse did the D800 performed with its 36mp disadvantage against D3s 12mp sensor under 100% cropped.

Hey bro Cowseye, have you made you decision to upgrade to D700, D800 or D800E?

Definitely not D700. D800 if ISO at 6400 is good, D4 if otherwise. D800E... Well, let's see some samples and get to know the local price diff of the 2 D800 models first...

The main key is the AF sensor is the same as D4 and the shrunk size makes it similar to pair with my D300s. But the ISO is the thing I worried most. I want FX body mainly becos of this.

How abt u bro?

Is D800's ISO capabilities surpasses the old D3? Hope some can answer my question.

What Mansurov says:

"When you look at a 12 MP image at ISO 3200 at 100% and then look at a 36 MP image at the same ISO at 100%, you will surely see more noise on the latter image. However, if you down-sample the 36 MP image to 12 MP, then the 36 MP image is actually going to come out cleaner than the 12 MP image. In addition, if you had a slight focus issue on both, the 36 MP image would look sharper when down-sampled to 12 MP... but I can say with confidence now that the D800 will give better results than the D700 when its image is down-sampled to 12 MP. Overall, we should be getting around a full stop of advantage noise-wise with the D800 compared to the D700."

I also very interested to know the D800 ISO performance. We are talking about 36MP.

Better than the D700 ? Maybe..........

But afraid not the D3s.............:nono:

Thanks, this explanation is very clear.

Down-sample means we set to small size in camera or reduce image size on the computer?

Post-processing... How to properly resize images in Lightroom

Take it at 36MP, then use Photoshop or some good software to downsample.

See... when we snap photos, some will look nice on the LCD but once loaded into the PC, cannot make it. Why? Because the LCD has a lower resolution than your 32 inch screen. Same principle but in reverse.

From their site.... interesting comment:

" D800E The Ultimate Attention to Detail
Nikon engineers have developed a unique alternative for those seeking the ultimate in definition. The D800E incorporates an optical filter with all the anti-aliasing properties removed in order to facilitate the sharpest images possible. This is an ideal tool for photographers who can control light, distance and their subjects to the degree where they can mitigate the occurrence of moiré. Aside from the optical filter, all functions and features are the same as on the D800 "

i reserve judgement and comments on Hi ISO noise control till when i have an actual production unit to test and pixel peep
just thinking about pixel peeping a 36.3MP file gives me goosebumps

but from the specs, i would say the D4 beats the D800 flat
fastest camera with fastest workflow get the D4

need to print huge prints or shoot mostly in a studio get the D800

nikkor lenses can resolve to 36m pixels? most of them? or just a few?

the slide says "Well supported" how well we will have to wait a little to find out

Ty uncle!

yes the face detection AF and AE is a good idea, makes sure that the exposure is made for the face of the subject

as per DP REVIEW:

" But there are potential downsides, too. The D3X, Nikon's current flagship, makes very high demands on lenses at 'only' 24MP and we wouldn't be surprised if some of the optics which D700 owners love so much don't shine quite so brightly at 100% on screen when bolted on front of a 36.3MP sensor... "

So u better all go get the 24 f1.4, 135 f2 DC, 200 F2, 14-24 f2.8 and the 70-200 VRII..... and and....
