First Impressions : Nikon D800

If you go by logic then it serves no purpose to buy a D800E now when existing batch of lenses cannot resolve the 36MP sensor ................ doesn't help if you also have to shoot at F8 to attain sharpness......... moreover, most LCD screens cannot optimally display a 7360x4912 pixel image .........looks like majority of us are better off just using a D700 and D3/S/X....... so who is still buying the D800/E?

isn't buying new equipment part of the fun of photography
it is not essential but it is fun

From the image samples, it seems the current top (trinity?) lenses 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 are good enough for the job, and match well with the D800/E.

it has 50 1.4g as well....i'm sure the newer and higher end 24, 35, 85 1.4g will produce even better results.

does the VG grip button have similar position

A camera with built in 1.5x TC. Sui! :bsmilie:

I am sure the 24/1.4G would be able to take advantage of 36MP, but only for f4-f8 work. So that's landscape.... Pretty niche usage. That's basing on usage with the D3X.

But hey it's not D3X price, so why should we be complaining? Just be happy with the capability, you could use the cam at 12-18MP and use the video to vid your baby/kids etc...
I am also sure the AF would be excellent as well as help in quite a few scenarios compared to the D700. Other stuff like 3.2" LCD are nice toppings....

60 micro, 135DC...

How bad would the 24mm be on f/1.4? I still need the thin DOF when shooting at MFD... hope that's not where it impacts

More importantly, there's no light loss! Won't turn ur F/4 birding lens to F/5.6!

Why worried so much about the lenses.... Let Nikon worried about it, not u.... Jus buy and enjoy if u have the moolah... For me, I be getting boxes of tissue.. Cause I can only drool....

I am a Canon user and is about to upgrade my gear. This announcement have certainly made me lost some sleep yesterday. Very good chance of me joining N family......real soon.....

As a nikon user, I suggest you not to..... unless you are still using entry level camera with kit lens or found compiling reasons to move, stay where you are from. The 5Dmk3 may make u regret later.

Yes it may be good. But please look at the whole system. Not just a camera or lens.
: ) Canon might come up something really good too. Remb.. every brand is Unique. Every brand have their pro and cons. Cheers

Woah! To actually lose sleep over this is serious stuff!

I use both Canon and Nikon dSLRs fairly regularly, and both are great if you ask me.

Do what it takes to make yourself happy! If the D800 is what you want, go for it.

haha, OT a bit....
Nikon sales people could be sleepless with you too....
judging from the response, the D800/D800E could thrash the D4 flat.....
but still, different user group la.... :)

I know there is absolutely no lens in the world @ f1.4 and any focal length (it is extremely tricky for 24mm FYI) that is sharp enough at the center to even take advantage of say 12MP on DX (comparatively say that's like 27MP on FX) wide open. It's still usable though, including microcontrast.

16MP on DX is like 37MP on FX already. 7D's 18MP makes it like 42MP on FX. 24MP for A77/65 makes it look like 57MP on FX.

Luckily, photographers shoot primes for many reasons (for my usage in weddings i have 3) other than pure resolution. Hey, i am still using the D70 + 85/1.8 to make money, granted it's really for a few frames out of several hundreds for each shoot. It's !@!@# sharp actually, just that it has a lot of CA on 6MP DX (14MP FX) @ 100%. Luckily for such uses we usually don't bother much @ 100%, except pre-wedding i guess which i don't do.

Total system resolution depends on both the sensor as well as the lens, it is not a "pure hard stop" based on the lens only. Let it run, and check out the results later....forgot the site but there are some which A-B compare lens and cameras.
