Call me nuts but I'll pay the extra for a D3 for the following reasons:

1. Not 100% viewfinder!
2. FPS cannot be pushed to 11FPS if needed (I love breakneck speeds, maybe due to my photography history)
3. Dual CF cards (Duh)
4. No shutter lag for 14bit RAW (let's assume D700 is same as D300 in this area)
5. No slight lag for 51pt 3d autofocus (let's assume the D700 is also the same as the D300 in this area)

Points 1, 4, 5 are pretty important for me.

You left out the 300k-rated shutter in the D3 v. 150k for D700.

Check this out, Nikon's D700 microsite...

and just after I moved a good chunk of money into some medium term investments... see if have any more money I can scrounge together...

kind of curious, is nikon releasing a 24-105 f4 VR lens for the D700? Wonder if there will be a kit option....

I HATE NIKON!!!

Something that I read on the CNET page that was quite amusing:

I don't see how reducing to SD could shave off the body weight substantially. :bsmilie:

Imagine shaving a couple of grams... so now it is 993g.. wow.. what a huge difference in weight.

"The processing circuitry is identical to the D3 and features 14 bit analog-to-digital conversions and a 16 bit processing path.......Like the D3, the frame rate of the D700 doesn't slow when the 14 bit option is selected."

Not very sure about Nikon's marketing strategy: D700 will kill a lot of potential sales of D3 in my opinion. I think if it has features that are not even in D3, so people will expect an upgraded D3/ or 4.

Those who can afford $2K will go for D300, $4K go for D700 and $6K for D3. Interesting to see what Canon will come up with after 5D...full frame competition is good

So what would be the next stage of competition after full frame? Another 10 years down the road, all P&S will be full frame no less? ha ha all of us need bigger better eyes to match the advancement in technology :)

I resisted D100, bought D70. Resisted D200, and was resisting D300 until a few weeks ago, just before the leaked D700 materials came out. Bought the kit during GSS. So maybe double whammy - D700 and SB-900?

So I wondered if I should be like kenthsg - hate Nikon?

First of all, it was nothing personal, Nikon has to push new products now and then. So if you are not early adopter, as I am, sure within short time frame you'll end up with new model after you buy your "dream camera".

I eventually convinced myself to buy D300 3 weeks ago even though the FX version was rumoured to be coming out soon was this - my predicted price of the FX version was around $4k, taking into account D3 and D300 prices - almost smack in the middle. So I could
(a) cough out $4k and be early adopter, and soon sweat real hard when the next generation goes for ~$2.5k in a year or two.
(b) enjoy D300 at ~$2.1k for a year or two and then buy presumably D800 for ~$3k, or used D700 for $1.5k in a year or two.

I chose option (b) cause I can enjoy D300 and get "D800" for roughly the price of D700 today, only limitation I imposed myself is no FX for 2 more years.

And my decision is to keep both DX and FX format, so that when I want to shoot portraiture, group photos, wide angles, etc I go FX. When I want to have the extra reach, like I want to try to shoot insects, birds, etc, I would go for DX.

Now the next big decision - when to buy my UW housing, for D300 or wait and continue with my S2Pro until D800 is out?

Oh the way to beat this syndrome is to be an early adopter - always buy the first or second shipment of the new camera. So the next newer and greater model is about 1.5 years away!

= $$$$$$$ :hung:

but then do remember that early adopters usually pay a higher price....
no need to get frustrated..... if the camera can serve your needs, then use it....
no point chasing the lastest camera... :)
