I believe you will still get the dark shadows with the lens hood off. Using a mounted flash will work, or alternatively, depending on what you are shooting, stand farther and zoom in
17-55 is great, useful, fast and reliable. love my 17-55 a lot but underutilized becoz no time to shoot.
How come nobody vote 15-85mm IS USM this lens. This is a sharp and the best walk around or travel lens I ever used. This lens produced very good colour, accurate & fast autofocus. Important it is sharp at all zoom range. Below photos are taking with a canon 1100D in Kukup, Johor Pontian Malaysia during my last holiday. Just share with you guy. Hope you like it.

I vote for the EFS 15-85mm. It's a great combination for weight, build quality, sharpness, and useful zoom range. If you need any wider u will need to get another lens for wide angle/fisheye.
It's more versatile than my previous 18-135mm, 18-55, 24-70, and all the primes. only 24-105mm on 5D comes close but distortion at 24mm annoys me so its sold.
Will be switching to EF 17-40mm L for my 7D. so this will be my walkaround lens
why not 16-35mm 2.8? Since its yr walkaround lens, u probably be shooting at any conditions. if you only shoot landscape, ok, f4 is enough.
15-85mm is the BEST standard walkabout lens!
A) I can use the built in flash, 17-55mm u have to switch to external speedlight.
B) the longer zoom is more important than larger aperture.
C) the diameter and weight of the lens is the right balance for any cropped sensor body.
D) very reliable lens.
E) search the Internet for the review, you be surprise!
