As far as low light situations, you would be better off getting the 50mm f/1.8 rather than the 40mm f/2.8... wider aperture in the former and half the cost.

If you are going to be using it for travelling purposes, I would lean towards the wide angle lens. There are several excellent models to choose from.

I see. But I read a few reviews and most say given a choice, they would take the 40mm. And how usable is the 50mm at f1.8? Wouldn't there be a very shallow DOF? Sorry, newbie here.

personally would take the 50mm f/1.8 if i have to choose between this 2 lenses as low-light wouldn't be a big issue if no flash is allowed at the said location..

1.8 would do good in subject isolation and background blurring (for those "creative" shots)

also in the future if u plan to get a 17-50mm f2.8 or 24-70mm f2.8 for upgrade u will thrash your 40mm f2.8 cause there is no more use for it. as for the 50mm f1.8 u may still have some use for it.

For me, I will take 50mm f1.8 over 40mm 2.8

-its cheaper. no need buy filter or protect much. seriously this is more important than u think!
-f1.8
-even though 40mm is smaller, how much bigger can 50mm 1.8 be when your dslr body is 'already so big'. the grip of yr camera is already protruding out so much.
-if u own 17-55, 16-35, 24-70, these lenses already inherit 40mm 2.8. leaving you just one reason to buy 40mm which is the small size.

if i buy 40mm, it would be for fun rather than functionality.

enjoy:)

Thanks for the help guys! Looks like I will get the 50mm! Or maybe the 35mm f2. Too many lens to choose from!

If you are still undecided and unsure, why not try them out at the Canon Showroom at Vivo. Better yet, rent them for a day or so and really give them a go.

For low light situations (which appears to be your requirement), the 50mm f/1.8 is perhaps the best of the three because it has the widest aperture. However, the IQ of the 35mm and 40mm are so close to the 50mm that it would be very difficult to tell them apart. It really boils down to your need/application.

Canon showroom means u can use it at that spot like what Court is doing by allowing the consumer to tryout the compact camera? Do they have 50mm f1.8 and 40mm f2.8 for trials there?

Important is that it is plugged into an APS-C camera.

Yes, you can try it on the spot. Their selection of lenses are limited so it's best to go there and see if they have the lenses you wish to try.

It would be no problem to use their lenses on an APS-C camera. If you don't wish to bring your own camera you can also request to try one of theirs. Just be sure to bring your own storage card so that you can bring the photos you take at the showroom at home for later inspection.

The 50 1.8 may give a bit more light but its built very cheaply (plastic lens mount) not good for travel etc. (its like a cheap toy, definately not good for studio or street work) The 40mm pancake is one tough lens... I use mine on a daily basis on both FF and DX bodies, in fact I am ordering a second one as well).... I love it...

Actually... I don't buy filters for protection even for my 'L' lenses. So... it don't matter to me if it was cheap or expensive lenses. f1.8 is desirable... but frankly, I shoot most of my shot at f4 and above and if lighting don't permit, I will use a flash or tripod.

I don't really care if it was smaller or what, in actual fact I like the feel of 50mm f1.8, it is the correct size for me, so I like 50mm size... and I am used to using the 50mm range more than the 40mm.

So... in actual fact, I will buy the 50mm as compare with the 40mm. :)

Because both studio and street get heavy use so a more robust lens is generally preferred...plus the 40 is smaller and I can fit the whole camera and lens in small pouch for street...and to me, the 40 is also very cheap...($150 on Amazon or ebay)..But hey...buy what ever makes you happy...I hope Canon makes a robust little 20mm and maybe a small little 90mm to go along with the 40mm pancake in the future... He He...

40 2.8 is useful for shooting video with the stm technology

the 50..1.8 has shallow dof, light, cheap..all round great lens for both video and stills.

the 17-55 has great FL range and IS so its all round great lens for both video and stills.

the 24-105 has even longer range so its all round great lens for both video and stills

the 15-85 also is all round great lens for both video and stills..

LOL

Yes same sentiments, which is exactly why I purchased the 50mm

It's us STM technology but still makes noise when filming, thus many ppl still use MF when shooting videos.

i think only the 650d and 700d is optimised for the STM tech for now...the 18-135 STM focusing noise is inaudible when i take a video with the 650d

The focus hunting can destroy the video, and manual focus work better than auto focus for videos and especially in low light situations, that's why people taking video tend to focus manually.

Can anyone tell me beside getting canon.. tamron or sigma better

Why you choose 50mm f1.8 and not f1.4? Is it because of the auto focus motoring?
