Only wish build quality is like L.........

The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 has a fairly good build quality. Quite sufficient for most needs really. Better build may also translate to greater costs!

If only you are concerned with DOF play. The EF-S 17-55 is still a f/2.8 lens in terms of widest aperture, and it still allows 2x more light than the 24-105L. In terms of stopping action, the f/2.8 is still very valuable.

I do not agreed.. does it mean my s95 f2.0 lens allows many more times light than 24-105L f4 ?
My understanding is that the bigger objective len allows more light. I mean the lens opening diameter.
There should be 2 factors, not just 1 based on aperture alone.

for simplicity, keeping all other factors the same, your s95 should yield the same luminance given the same shutter, ISO and f-stop as any other camera like 7D or 5D. your s95 is smaller but at the same time, the sensor size and image circle is also smaller.

unless you are talking about t-numbers though..

Well.... for the price of 17-55, it should hv a metal body since 70 200 f4 also hv it...

I do not mind if the body isn't metal like the white Ls, but yes, even though it may produce L quality images, for $1.5K, canon should up the build quality, like a smoother zoom ring and a bigger focus ring and at least more rugged plastics. At very least, throw in a hood canon!

Used to have 15-85, and switched to 17-55. No regrets. The f2.8 and better colour works for me.

Actually I used to have 15-85 too, and I prefer 15-85 to 17-55 due to simple reasons of f2.8 just isn't fast or bright enough for indoor shots that don't allow flash. Would need prime lenses for that. E.g. 28 f1.8 and 50 f1.4 anything faster AKA L lenses is better but I cannot afford

I'm using canon 17-55mm n loving it till now. 50mm f/1.4 is great too..

Dear all 17-55mm users, if you were to go Full Frame, which lens would you replace 17-55 with?

17mmx1.6= 27.2mm
55mmx1.6= 88mm

Basically its 24-70mmL that is similar to this range at F2.8
With 24-105mmL IS, u can slightly more reach, but at F4. With IS, maybe 1 or 2 stop better.

Weight wise, 24-70mm is heavier.
Just depends on your factors when u deciding on the lens....

as a constant traveller i prefer 24 105 on the body day + 16 35 in my bag or maybe a 28/35 mm f1.4 or f1.8 at night when strolling the street.

I think most 17-55mm users would go for a 24-70mm if going to full frame since 17-55mm technically translates to that range considering the crop factor.

I think it also depend on the intended use......

not replacing it as i'm more of a UWA person.

the general purpose zoom range does not work for me.

but if i really have to choose one lens, then it will be the 40/f2.8 STM.

for users who are on budget and looking for great build quality , focus window, nice zoom ring, nice focus ring and USM...

you may wish to consider the 28-05mm EF F3.5-4.5 USM (the aperture specification is specifically important as there are 3 other versions of 28-105 USM which are inferior optically ). Mk 1 of this lens has 5 aperture blades and Mk 2 has 7. this was a "lite" L-type ("hidden" L ) which was phased out due to being too good (and spoiling L market )

For me is the EF-S 15-85mm IS, (eq. 24-136mm) covering wide 24mm to 136mm.
Why 17-55mm?
Sometimes when u need to use build-in-flash. 17-55mm will have "dark shades at the bottom of image due to the large 77mm lens diameter.
Not every time it's neccessary to be f2.8, la.
Look at Full frame sensor lens - 1D series got 24-70mm. 5D series got 24-105mm. APS-C got 24-136mm (with 15-85mm)

I'm using the 17-55mm efs on 60D. When using built in flash during low light, can see a dark shadow at the bottom of the picture. How about using mount on flashes, will it be useful?

Did u use lens hood? If yes, remove it, it'll solve ya problem. Alternatively, use mounted flash..

I believe you will still get the dark shadows with the lens hood off. Using a mounted flash will work, or alternatively, depending on what you are shooting, stand farther and zoom in
