hi, newbie here anyway i'm going to bali with my fiancee and will be shooting mostly scenery, sunsets, and potraits.

currently im using 400D

and i have theese lense, :

-Canon 18-55mm IS
-Canon 17-85 IS USM
-Canon 17-55 IS USM
-Canon 50mm 1.8

i only want to bring 1 lens cause i've brought to many other thing for a gift as i have lots of friends who stays there,
can you recommend which lense to take ?

thank you.

17-55 IS USM

17-55 IS USM

Second that. Its the most versatile of all the lenses.

But if you had the option, and want to cover everything on a 400D,

24L or 35L, 17-55 f2.8, 70-200 f4 L and a 10-22mm.

yes... thats one of the best setup available for travel especially the 10-22..
covers a very very very nice wide angle..

can also open it up with a

85L 16-35L and 70-200 f2.8 IS L....

I brought my 10-22, 17-55 f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 55-250 IS + 580EX.
Left my 70-200 f2.8IS at home, too heavy to carry around.
Already, my gear weighted 6kg. Will be quite tiring if you carry more and need to walk long distances

17-55 gets the most use, but 10-22 & a tele required for specific situations.

WOW! so may lens you got there...
i have exactly the same gears as yours a couple of months ago.
but i ditched off 17-85IS, 18-55IS, & 400D for 40D.;)

but i would second others for 17-55. with a little foot work, you can beat 17-85 in terms of range but its unbeatable zoom lens at night.

goodluck on your trip.;)

i bring 17-55mm, the best optics to get the best quality photos.

i travel with my 17-55mm IS... maybe a 100mm macro along...

any opinions on 35L + 135L on a 5D for travel?

Street + Scenery

I like to use this combination when I travel with family, especially in crowded places.

If on a dedicated photo taking trip, I'd bring my 17-40 + 70-200 + 35L + 100M(optional).

TOTALLY agreed! This is the main workhorse for me. Covers about 90% of my shots.

It's almost always accompanied by the 10-22.

Sometimes, I will bring the 70-200 f/4 IS... but that's rare and only when I am NOT going on an extensive trekking trip. :bsmilie:

Hm supposing limited to < $1k lenses for trip use, so no 17-55 or 17-40L. Is it worth replacing a 18-55 non-IS with stuff like,

ef-s 17-85 IS+USM
ef-s 18-55 IS/USM
tamron 17-50 f/2.8

Is the IS at such focal range worth getting? Or better off getting a 55-250 and 50 1.8 for low light emergencies? Or splurge on only a UWA?

I use 17-40 F4L and 135 F2L most of the time. Sometimes might bring the 50mm F1.4 for low light shots.
:)

IS is ALWAYS good to have. I will pick the Tamron if I am on a budget, just because f/2.8 gives you better control in your depth of field. But remember (i) to check for decentered elements (ii) to check for focus accuracy (iii) this lens will hunt in low light.

Otherwise, get the cheap 18-55 IS + 55-250 IS. I think all beginners should start with these lenses before deciding on what they need.

on my most recent trip i took the following: EFS10-22, EF24/1.4, EF50/1.4, EF70-200/4.

strangely enough, i didn't miss the EFS17-55/2.8 at all. i'm beginning to think that it's too heavy to carry for not enough usage between 20mm and 50mm.

Am in overseas now.
I personally don't mind heavy weight when travelling, so i carry a backpack.
Think that tripod is a must for me.
For me right now i'm carrying the 10-22, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 II (kit lens), 50mm f/1.8 II (indoor cafe shots, low light use).
If i've more choices (more dough beforehand) I would also bring the 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
for me, i wouldn't like to find myself in a situation where i want to capture sthg and I can't!
my 2 cents preference.

Hm but the dough for 10-22 is bigger than the dough for 55-250! Seems like quite a few travellers don't really snap beyond 100mm.

depends on what's your priority and your needs.
for me i would prefer a UWA to capture as much details as possible
the telephoto zoom lens is just for me to capture some other details which i might want to capture.
priority wise the UWA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> telephoto :DDDDD

Wah bro got yours too eh!
Im enjoying mine very much...LoL
For me i will be carrying my 10-22mm and 50mm f1.4 for the coming trip to Japan. Should be getting the Tammy 17-50mm there too..eheh

Hello 10-Dee-Q,

On a recent trip to Israel, I brought along the following:

18-55 IS
85 f/1.8
10-22

I guess if I had the 17-55 IS, I would bring that along, although on a 400D, the 18-55IS makes for very comfortable travelling, since the combo is pretty light. Didn't take much night scenery, so the 18-55 IS worked well for those day-time shots. Bought the 10-22 just before the trip, but it actually didn't see much use... 85 f/1.8 didn't see much use as well, since the trip involved a lot of walking in a group, and it was pretty difficult (and potentially hazadous) to change lens while walking and balancing a backpack!

So my 2 cents worth? Go with the 17-55 IS, since you have one already!
