Currently: Two lenses: wide & tele both zoom

Mostly because of budget constraints...bought a EOS 400D kit with EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 in April, just got my second lens (at second-hand) which is an EF 28-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Was keeping travel/walk-around/general-purpose photography in mind when deciding on what lens to get (after buying my 400D kit) to slowly build up my kit.

The 18-55 mm is of course not my ideal lens but it works for the wide angle shots I need to do. Plan to get an EF-S 10-22 mm as well, but that will probably be late next year.

What prime lens is good to complement what I already have? Looking for a prime lens as a possible alternative to the 10-22 mm or even 18-55 mm for wide angle shots during travel photography. My camera kit seems to be lacking in this aspect lol. Are prime lens crucial to a good camera kit?

Would be traveling to the UK in June 2008 hopefully on a school trip. Hope to have a decent camera kit by then. Heard that UK street photography is a rather one-of-a-kind experience!

if you thinking of doing travel photography, u can get 24-105mm ( cheaper) or 24-70mm ( expensive). This is one of the best combo. =) 10-22mm is a gd WA lens. but can get later. i would prefer to get a better general purpose lens first.

I did consider both the 24-105 and 24-70 but both are L-grade lenses and not cheap. Plus i'm still very much an amateur. In terms of focal length range, I'm happy with my 28-135 mm.

Just looking for an affordable wide angle to replace my 18-55, or maybe a prime lens.

a prime lens wont be neccessary yet if you intend to buy a lens within the 28-135mm range.. can save the money..

Partly depends on the purpose and length of the trip?

If backpacking and moving from place to place, most likely a wide (10-22mm) and tele (70-200mm).

If got base camp (hotel) to allow me to leave behind excess stuff and return to every night, I might squeeze in a macro lens (100mm)

Anyone had experience in Taiwan?
Thinking of bringing a 10-22 for landscape shots
am thinking if i should bring a 50mm or a flash(Dun even know need or not)
as well

Well, bring a 10-22 if you are going to the contryside or up the mountains. The cities are a bit more cramped than Singapore so you might want to go for details instead with a tele-photo.

I see. I already have a 28-135 mm. So it looks like I need a UWA. Time to start saving up for the EF-S 10-22 mm then.

What other UWA lenses are good for travel?

10-22mm is definitely the best for ef-s body. on 1.6x, the perspective is approximately 16-35mm. There have been alot of positive reviews about this lens. You wont go wrong with this WA lens. =)

Bring tripod on the days that you need it. Pack the tripod in your luggage case when you depart for Taiwan. That's i did when i travel. =) Request for a fragile label for the luggage as well.

I carry 17-55 and 50 1.8 to china last month (on crop body) but end up using 17-55 all the time. It suits my need but a longer end would be useful for some candid street shots. For travel on crop body, the wide end (10 to 35) is much needed. Some possible combo I am thinking about for my next travel:

1. 17-55 + 70-200 1.4L
2. 17-55 + (85 or 100)
3. 10-22 + 24-105L - this combo might means more lens changing
4. 24 + 85 + Sigma 18-200 - prime for low light/indoor/at night
5. 16-35L + 24-105L + 85

Too many choices...:dunno:

1) is there an f/1.4 L? I think you mean f/4?
2) would a single prime lens be sufficient to cover the 55< range?
3) i think i'm most comfortable with this combi
4) does the Sigma 18-200 make a good walk-around? this choice seems to be lacking a wide angle option
5) can't afford =(

Just my two cents worth. Haha.

i agree with you,on a cropped body, wide end will be very useful indeed
Its when you're trying to shoot candids and cant decide if you should switch to a mid range zoom:sweat:

still waiting for canon's 10-85 F4:think:

I like option 3 best. This is the combo I always carry on a trip :) 10-22 90%, 24-105 10% when I was using my 30D b4.

I now carry 2 bodies cuz it is so much easier than changing lens.

I using oly system so I have 11-22mm on E330 and 50mm f2 amcro on E510.

Basically I have a 22-44mm WA and a 100mm prime/macro. (in terms of 35mm)

I find that 22mm is wide enough for 95% of the stuff and the 100mm prime is good for portraits, macro. The reduction in weight by using a teleprime, I can carry an extra body.

For the same amount of weight I can carry

1) ONE body and two zoom lens.
OR
2) Two bodies and 1 WA zoom and 1 teleprime.

I think 2 is MUCH more convenient to use.
