Nothing wrong to own a car but is good to know how expensive to maintain it.

Everyone only live once and it is good opportunity to able to own a car and drive around.

Yeah.. Initially, I was thinking along the line of taking a longer term loan, but I see so many people going for the shortest possible loan, so it really made me rethink the cost of owning a car.

Everyone says Nissan Sunny is a drinker, but I drove it at 16.5 km/liter!!!
75% highway and 25% city.

85% highway, I can hit 17.3 km/liter!!!

Road comfort is better than Civic 05 model.

Any suggestions?

I have Vios and Lancer GLX (<$60k) in mind but I'd like to see comments on Latio and City also.

what car have u in mind? just the 2 of them?
when i was buying a car 3 months ago, me and my wife test drive about 5 cars over the weekend. first weekend to test drive, the next weekend to place booking deposit.

my situation is to ferry 2 small kids (3.5 years and 6 months) to mother-in-law house daily.

yes, overall having a car is much more convenience.
the costs are huge to me.
ave monthly
1) $600 loan
2) 90+40+90 = 220 season parking
3) $250 petrol
4) $80 ERP+other parking
5) $125 insurance
6) $75 road tax

as u can see almost $1.5k monthly for all the convenience.

take taxi, unless call booking (extra surcharge), have to see your luck.
if raining, then worst, call cannot even go through the various taxi company.

i'm quite sure u have done your maths.
as for taking loan, if u can earn more than the loan interest rate, by all means take max loan. if not then take min loan.

not an expert in cars, so second hand cars are out for me.
unless got a good friend who is a good mechanic who can advise on the car well-being.

furthermore, for $60k car range, not much saving can be derive from getting second hand car. if u intend to get those high end conti, merc, bmw, audi, volvo, then it is worth considering.

go and test drive all those car,
ask them info about loan, duration, interest rate.
discount on car price
how much insurance you would need to pay.
what freebies can they give.
what is thrown in.
even solar film, also need to ask what kind they give. there are $150 solar film and $800 solar film.

btw, i think the honda city and suzuki sx4 have the largest boot size. more than 500l which i think is one of the more important thing for consideration.

I always drive at 80 km/hr.
Smooth Traffic.
14" rim, everything original.

You forgot about the Maintenance cost.:D

I have also heard about the horror stories of Sunny, but it turns out to be a pretty good ride.

Just lilke playing tennis, need to find the sweep spot of the car's cruising speed. Mine is at 80 km/hr.

Pretty impressive, considering it is an automatic.
It proved one theory, big CC does not equate to big drinker.:)

As long as it's a cheap, good, fuel efficient sedan it should fit my criteria.

I can afford the loan + interest now, my concern is a few years down the road.

Did you get your car at a COE low? $600/mth, how much loan did you take and for how many years?

I have seen but not test driven Vios, City, Impreza, Lancer GLX, Rio and Cerato. I haven't seen the SX4. I'm leaning toward Vios J because it's new and FC is supposed to be quite good. I have yet to bring my wife to go and see, so that will probably happen soon.

Different dealers have different offers so it can be quite confusing also.. :( Insurance will be expensive for me also because I just got my licence.

Fuel consumption is dependent on the following, for the same car with the same engine

1. Driver i.e. do you like to accelerate fast etc
2. Road conditions i.e. do cruise of have to start/stop/start often
3. Weight of the car, the lighter the better
4. Weight of the tyres plus wheels. Larger tyres/rims combination means more weight further from the axel, takes more energy to turn the wheels. Heavier rims means more weight for the car to turn the wheels.

yar... i book it during the $8118 cat A coe period. that is why 1 weekend to test drive, the 2nd weekend to book.

my loan is about 40k, 7 years.
actually i prefer stationwagon. tons of bootspace. but the most affordable wagon is the chevy optra estate which my wife do not like. the rest of the wagon is out of range.

u have a kid now, must remember that there may be more to come. make sure that the car can fit it another one, also must consider a maid later on also. all these are prespective from a family man.

yar... different dealer got different offer, make sure you ask what they going to offer.
btw, how old are you? also it good if you wife can drive also. if she can't make sure she go and learn.
