What is your walk around lens?

24-105mm will have issue at dim environment right? example like wedding or dinner events... cos i caught in a fix on what lens to buy for my walk around... should i go f2.8 categories?

At weddings and dinners, I'd use flash if allowed even if I have a faster lens. Get a 2.8 for the shallower DOF, brighter viewfinder image and more accurate AF, not just for faster shutter speed. If the ability to use a faster shutter is all you care about, get a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.2. Unless you plan to get the guests in a wedding photo to stand in a straight line when you take their photo, the shallow DOF is going to work against you.

I find the 24-105mm to be a very useful range for my needs. When outdoors, it stays on my camera most of the time. It's long enough to be able to take photos of my kids without interfering with what they're doing. Sure, I often wish it is wider, but I would miss the longer end more (compared to, say, 17-55mm f/2.8 which would be my choice for indoors).

wah... kit lens 18-55 IS most of the time and 55-250 on the bag... yeah poor me :dunno:

either 17-55 IS USM or 17-40L for me...

24-105 for me, it doesn't weigh a brick, it's wide enough for landscape for me, even on a crop and I really enjoy the long end for closeups.

Thread digger spotted! ;p

But nevertheless it is better than starting a new thread :bsmilie:

Anyway for me nowadays the walkaround lens is 70-300 instead. Last time used to be 24-105 but now change in shooting style etc. So walkaround lens's definition can vary with different people :)

Agree with your final statement. Some prefer tele zooms, while some ultra-wide zooms and mid zooms for walkaround. Primes such as 24mm, 50mm and 135mm can be gd walkaround lenses too.

Been experimenting with a 35mm f/2 I recently bought on CS. On my 400D, it gives a very nice FOV for street photography.

Indoors including weddings - 16-35 f/2.8L II ; Outdoors the EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM. The standby 50 f/1.4 is in the pocket.

currently using kit lens, will get sigma 17-70 soon

Another rare EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM user spotted!

I'm using Tamron 17-50mm as my walk around lens, compact, light and good IQ. Sometimes 50mm prime for potrait shot.

24-105mm f4 on 450D
