What is your walk around lens?

hi ditilolon, thanks for the reply and feedbacks! i'm going rent the lens to try as i'll be covering an event the coming weekend, would be a great opportunity to evaluate my comfortable range further! ;) (will prob only try the 24-105 though)..

No problem :)

Good idea! Another way is to check the EXIF on all your photos, so you can see what your preferred focal lengths are. Most importantly the lens must suit your shooting style.

ef 17-55 f/2.8 on a 1.6 cropped body

24-105 f/4 on a full frame body

IS have greater advantage over 2.8 unless u doing sports photography.. but we are talking about walkaround lens here
the 24-105 is more useful than 24-70 if u taking a night scenery handheld... mainly becos it got IS and 2.8 arnt useful when we are shooting landscape with high aperture number..

24-105 got 0.45m macro ability... which can create bokeh on objects

I will have to disagree here. If you are serious about people photography, you'd be using a lens that can freeze motion. IS helps nothing here. Why do event photographers always go for larger aperture lenses if they can help it? For the purpose of freezing motion.

Night landscape. Why would you do it handheld and try and make do with inferior image quality that you know cannot match up to simply using a tripod, even with a cheapo lens stopped down? IS is no substitute for a tripod.

BTW, the 24-70 also has macro ability, with minimum focusing distance going to as little as 0.39m

This is some of the close-up work that I've done with the 24-70

There is a software somewhere that plots it for you!
This one perhaps? http://www.cpr.demon.nl/prog_plotf.html

If there is such a lens, would u be able to pay for it and willing to lug it out?

No, but at least I can stay online and brag about it (which of course, is more important!)

He asked for walkaround lens... not a lens specialised for events photography...
a good walkaround lens also demands suitability for artitectual photography... where 24-70 loses out in focal length and IS.... and events photography can use flash

And how is the 24-105 any more suited for architectural photography? :dunno:

Wow that's really cool. Hahaha and it's freeware too! :) But you know what, I think most people can roughly gauge the focal lengths they usually shoot at already. We're all creatures of habit anyway. :)

But  for a more mathematical approach! Too bad it won't work on Macs.

So easy! Heyer calebk, don't waste people's time with your dumb question ^^

The 24-105L has a smaller f/4 aperture so there's a shorter travel time on the aperture dial to reach f/8 when shooting architechure.
Can you even begin to imagine rolling your control dial from f/2.8 to f/8? Plus the 24-70 is so heavy already. Risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome you know. TSK. Correct me if I'm wrong, man.

Anyone can brag abt anything out of this world, but NPNT.

The 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L is already cumbersome to use, expensive and it's popularity exacerbated by its niche group of users... What more an L superzoom that starts at 10mm with an aperture of f/2.8? It's going to seriously weigh, and seriously cost something.

I'd rather stick to changing lenses, even if I could afford one. Hypothetically, since it doesn't exist.

OK we've OT-ed enough with this phantom lens, let's get back on topic!

:bsmilie: Ya la. It's three more clicks if your SLR is set to 1/3 exposure steps and two more clicks if your SLR is set to 1/2 exposure steps. How could I forget. So tiring. Hai...

Usually use my Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 or EF 50mm f/1.8 ...

keen to upgrade to EF 24-105mm f/4L though ...

Canon EFS18-200 for me at the moment.

EFS 17-55 2.8 .. I use it almost 99% of the time .. So it worth every cents of it ...

If i really need an all-rounder walkaround lens, would be Tamron's 28-300 VC, else i would still change lens.

anyone tried using tamron 18-270mm as a walkabout? multipurpose for everyday usage.. easy to bring around with ur "to office" gear.

if leisure allows + weight etc... canon 17-40L f4 for landscape till evening light.24-70L f2.8 for indoors, 70-200 f2.8 (non IS) for reach. 50mm f1.8 for fun.

hi all! my first post..

anyway i'm currently using the 70-200 f4 IS lens.

Loving the image quality! :)
