Utterly Disgusted by Alan Photo

i dont agree with the viewpoint here of many that we should always do extensive research and then go these shops!?!! why? the best shops shd provide the same & lowest best price to any customer who walks in....a newbie or an experience mod like streetshooter...a cheapskate or a savvy knowledgeable buyer etc!! that is the minimum i expect and of course topping it up with nice friendly service would be like icing on the cake.

so far I have only experience fair uniform pricing at OP and i hear from friends here that CP is also good.

but they should not take our innocence & lack of knowledge for granted and take us for a ride...i would avoid such shops always and forever. so they may get one sale but i ain't gonna remain dumb forever u know...the day i get to know...game over!! AP, Song Bros, etc are such shops that i have come across. Am totally with the TS here...esp AP is the i know it all attitude and thinks we are the priviledged ones to walk into his shop!! and their preference (or shd i say love) for the fat pocket touristy customers and older known customers is so obvious...very bad vibes for newbies...he is the loser after all...we take our business elsewhere. baaahhhh...wake up fellas.

There are also CP bashing threads (which I participate in) and OP bashing threads (which I also participate in) and probably MSColor bashing threads if you dig deep enough. Even John 3:16 has been bashed before as I recall (too busy, ignored by salesman).

My relationship with AP happened accidentally. I was in Sim Lim many years ago and thought I would check out a Kodak digital camera, and ended up buying a Nikon Coolpix 700 instead. Have bought most of my stuff from there since then, at prices comparable to elsewhere. They know I ask around for the best prices.

Prices are not always the best, but close to the best without any haggling, now that I have been established as the "cheapskate" customer. I'm also quite no-nonsense, in the sense that I do all my own research online, and basically just test out the feel of the camera or lens before comitting to the purchase. No hemming and hawing and try this and that and have to entertain long long.

This approach works even for that most feared of all Sim Lim stores - Song Brothers. I bought my Ixus 850 from there. It cost just a little more, but the salesman knew from the start that I knew about what I wanted to buy, and I knew the market price. He compensated by trying to get me to buy little extras, but I politely declined, and he threw them in for free at the end anyway (to win my repeat business, he said).

Could not have said it better. AP has my business, I find their price very competitive. If AP does not have what I want, I give my business to CP. Sometimes I just give my business to CP because their shops are within walking distance from where I work.

Most people here have a very silly perception that the salesmen are there to help you make decisions. Regardless of whatever salesmen we talk to, all they want is to close the sale to make moeny from us and that is it. Service is a subjective thing, what is good for one is nonsense for another. e.g. some people don't like to be tailed around the shop by salesmen as they think that the salesmen are afraid they might steal or break something, others think they are some important VIP and need to be showered with attention by the salesmen of every shop they go to, get the best advice or get deserve the best price. Silly people think like this.

but its the norm that we often, more than not, that they help "ang mohs" make decisions.. just a stroll along Song Bo in SLS, you can see those salemen like tigers hunting their ang mo preys... :sweatsm: i would give such shops a miss :bsmilie: coz i am not their piece of meat to hunt on... :nono:

But it is the same for all salesmen, whoever they are, wherever they come from and whatever they do. If not for regulations in some industries that control the ethics of companies and their representatives, most salesmen will be the similar e.g. remember bucket shops?

The reason why ang mohs get targetted is dependent on where they come from. Electronic stuff cost a lot, especially in Europe and Australia. Even if they pay the "ah beng" premium, the stuff they buy could be comparatively cheaper than buying from their own country.

If one want fixed price and good services, why not buy from Best Denki with prices are displayed clearly.

different salesperson will quote different price. this has been repeated over and over again. AP is not a place if u want customer service. they go for quantity, clear as much as they can, which is different from ms color, CP etc. SLS is a place full of salesperson. They are salesperson, sales=earnings. How much they earn is dependent on how much they mark up on every unit, so their pricing is different. All this actually boils down to whether u have done enough research on checking the price.

If i work in SLS, i believe i would be the same, preying on ang mohs, since the electronics sold in their native countries is so much expensive. I had an exchange classmate who paid about $100 dollars more for an ipod which he bot fr lucky plaza. Yet he was so proud of his purchase, on the grounds, that it is cheaper than what he was offered in the UK. Singaporeans are more aware of the price, very difficult to earn every cent for them. In sales, sad to say, time=money. Of cos, go for the pp who are easier to close.

i was at CP today to look for an Lowepro backpack. now the first thing one notices is that all items have price tag, a price tag the sales person claimed is the "recommended" price tag! it said S$668 on the bag i had in mind, however after asking what the price is was told roughly 330$... similar story for other bags. so i querried "why put price tag with double price? not the real price?". the answer was "we cannot give fixed price, price depends on customer! if you are regular you get extra discount...."

so the dear madam told me straight into the face that the price is made up depending on how she feels...
so much about CP customer service... this practice is just bullshit!

I believe they have their reason for not displaying their price. Just like AP and Ms color, etc. Have to ask to get the price. Displaying the price is as good as letting their competitors know how much they are selling, so they can undercut them. But tt mdm who has served you could have told u this reason, instead of telling you, how much u pay is dependent on how much u patronise the shop (so called regulars). It is not uncommon to practise regulars=better pricing. So prob she need to restructure her statement, tho they meant the same thing.

If u have read the thread earlier (one of the postings on AP), u have noticed. Better pricing is dependent on boss's mood. That one is even more unacceptable.:bsmilie:

true, so for me, i would buy my camera items from other places apart from SLS  or i try to avoid during the weekends where the crowd is :p

Hmm... I had bought my lowepro from the dear madam too. No choice but just accept it as I am rushing for time.

I've shopped at a few of these places. On balance I still think J3:16 has the best service. They are *EXTREMELY* busy though, because good service takes time and a lot of regulars tend to go back. IMHO, the price premium is worth it to me (not speaking for anybody else) because if something goes wrong they will help me out rather than leave me to kena. They already have!

Their recommendations may tend towards the high end, sometimes I accept them, sometimes I tell them with a smile "No way, no money, gimme something I can afford" :D but it's still up to you to do market research and you can always refuse a recommendation and they are cool with that.

haha, i was kinda of disappointed with CP a few months back and had started and closed the thread for cp. Guess now everyone at clubsnap is feeling the pinch from AP & CP again.

To Trust or Not to Trust?
To Buy or Not to Buy?
CP or AP?

So having a price tag and being honest in telling you their pricing practice is bad customer service????

Customer service and pricing policy of a product are 2 separate issues.

shoppers should not look like fools. bad shops deserve to be blacklisted.
