Thoughts on LEICA M ?

With regard to point 2.

I can actually hear a click when i turn on the camera. As though the shutter just went off.

Then I can hear a soft click when the camera is switched off.

And it is not in LV mode. I assume no life images on the LCD screen means the LV is switched off right?

Just gotten my M yesterday.
Everything was perfect except the following:

1) Flickering frame lines. Did any bro or sis here notice it? Does not matter white or red frame lines. There is definitely visible flickering. Is this normal?
2) Shutter click sound when you turn the camera on or off. Is this correct? Sounds like the shutter blades are moving.
3) Slow start up... almost 5s... Is it suppose to be so slow?

Did you check before you paid?

Of course I checked before I paid. But the flickering frame lines are very hard to detect. Only on close inspection, then I did notice.

And I just realised that if I switch to Advance metering, the shutter click sound will take place both when you switched on and off the camera.
Once switch back to classic mode, there will be no noise.

Lastly, the startup is slow... but not a big issue.

Any body else can confirm the frame line flickering?

Alright!!! Think I found the reason for the flickering frame line!!!

If I point the view finder patch on a bright part of an image, it will brightened up.

But if I point at VF patch at a darker spot, the frame line will darkened up.

Thus if I have shaky hands and point the VF patch at an image with varying patterns of contrast, the frame lines will appear to be 'flickering'!

Notice that it is more apparent when using fluorescent lightings.

Is my observation correct?

Advanced metering uses LV to meter therefore the shutter is open.

I am DSLR user for years. I am keen to switch over to Leica especially my CFO has approved as she want me to carry less weight when I travel with her.

Casually walked into the Leica shop at Mandarin on Sunday. Played with the M240 for about 30 mins. I guess with more practise, I should able to get use to the focusing method.

But what surprise me is the price difference. The shop quoted me S$10,800. I can easily get S$8,500 in Europe or US. Does not make sense for me especially I will be in Europe in July.

Is this fix price? How about the pricing in the dealers?

Will there be warranty issue if I get a set in Europe?

regards

SG Leica is high cause they KNOW they can sell to the rich.... many here !! Its a Luxury Brand after all.

But you may get 5% off if you push.

SG Leica prices is one of the highest in Asia. Even HK is cheaper than us by at least 10-15%. If you go to Europe this July, it's a good time to get one or even 2 (if you intend to sell back in SG?). Provided they have stock, seems stocks are very limited in Europe and US at the moment, unlike Asia which still can be found easily.

Leica provides international 2 years warranty no matter where you buy. Quite safe. Good luck and happy shopping if you find a piece.

Europe is definitely cheaper especially after VAT deductions. But they usually have stocks issues. I would check out the Leica dealers in the cities I am visiting and perhaps place an advance order. Leica dealers are usually very reliable.

I've been calling various dealers, stock seems quite hard to find. Anyone got any news when new stock will be coming in?

Demand i hear is freaking high. Best dig in for a wait.

So d X Vario is a decoy? LOL

Has anyone done a comparison with the Ricoh GXR A16 module? I think the X Vario and the A16 module are the only 2 APSC sensors with fixed zooms on the market at this point in time?

Will be interesting on how they fare against one another?? :bsmilie:

Sean Reid found a few flaws with the A16, never mind the obvious decentering defect in his sample.

I like the ingenious way Leica implemented AF and MF switching on the X-Vario.
