I believe Trend Micro has a free, web-based version for Mac OS X, but I've never tried it.
The only reason for which I think you'd ever need it is exchanging files with Windows users.
curious... can a Windows virus screw a Mac?
i'm using a Mac at home and Windows at the office and i transfer files between system regularly.
i think quite unlikely since the mac doesn't use the windows system library and has no PC bios. but a microsoft office macro virus could potentially mess up microsoft office for mac stuff.

This is the first time I tried to watch a DVD after I got my iMac.
However, as usual, the Mac DVD player allows only 5 times to set the DVD region. I have DVDs from the US, local, China, etc so this restriction is certainly a hinderance.
Does any of you know a way out of this to get region-free viewing?
I've downloaded VLC player but it doesn't seem to work well on my iMac. Makes a grinding sound as it tries to read the DVD without success.

you can try VLC. It can load from disk. No need to use mac's own dvd player.

Region-coding is definitely a bitch. If you dont mind the wait, rip it to your harddisk first with Handbrake, then watch it in full glory on your tv and home theatre with WD TV.
Not in a case where you're transferring files between the two on separate physical machines.
There are trojans that can be built into JPEG files but only unpatched systems would be affected at all and I've yet to see a JPEG crafted specifically for Macs. Of course, you might pass that file onto someone else using Windows, which would be a problem.
If you don't know the difference, viruses work without any help. Trojans require the user to do something extra and on Mac OS X, you must give your administration authorisation to help them work.
A more likely case of cross-system contamination is a Microsoft Word virus, but not all of those work so well and with MS Office 2008 for Mac, there is no Visual BASIC for Applications, so no MS Office viruses work.
There have also been a number of security issues with Adobe Acrobat and Reader, but a Mac user doesn't need Reader at all since Preview can handle the same files.

Yes, there is some issue where either Snow Leopard has closed the region code gap or VLC isn't working around the region code. Feel lucky, though, because on some systems, you can't watch any coded DVD at all. The grinding sound is annoying and I had to go back to my almost 5 year old PowerBook to play a DVD.
