The Mac Thread (Apple related Stuff)

Huh....?

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I thought by region limitation, it means you got only 5 times to switch between regions. And not 5 different regions to choose from. Moreover, there are not many regions to choose anyway.

heck... i've always thought that the 5 limitations are for 5 different region settings and not 5 viewings of different regions...

darn it.

Yep it's changing your hardware settings. Really dumb when all dvd players in asia are region free...

lugging a 21" imac without box through customs? the customs officer must've been really slack to miss that :bsmilie:

For those unaware:

hahahha... i missed the 21" iMac. i thought he's getting a Macbook or something.

yes, then it will auto run again if you insert the disc on the other drive.

Think you need to turn off iDVD from launching when you insert a disc.

Mac Tablet where are you?

On 27th January, I believe you'll know.

Oh you've experienced the grinding sound too? Didn't sound good huh... like the DVD player going to be spoilt. :o

Good for you... For me, watching on the iMac is my only way as I don't have a DVD player system at home. And my old PC is now in some corner of my home sleeping almost for good. :)

Very disappointed actually cos I was looking forward to watching my favorite DVDs on my new iMac using the iDVD. If there's a region code restriction, my iMac as good as useless as far as watching movies is concerned. I think this is definitely one big minus point about Macs, at least for the newer ones.

noelmac, as peterpan mentioned, I also don't think it's the drive that restricts the region coding. It's the software.

Snow Leopard is so broken for me that I don't have a lot of freedom. Generally, I wait until 10.x.4 release but this MacBook came pre-loaded with Snow Leopard, so I must wait for it to be fully functional. Even my external DVD writer for my PowerBook isn't working with my MacBook yet, so I can't want region 1 movies.

Of course, if Apple would use the cheap drives found in Windows machines, you could change the drive's firmware to ignore the region coding, but Apple are trying to keep things legal.

Did you try, "Go into preferences for DVD player and deselect the checkbox marked 'when disc is inserted start playing'"?

Thanks for the input bro.

Think it's better to purchase online with education discount :)

not sure if this will work...

since it's a bit difficult to code something to bypass the region checking in Mac, why not bootcamp into Windows and run AnyDVD? wouldn't this be easier to watch DVDs (but will it work?) :dunno:

Isn't buying Windows an expensive alternative to an external DVD drive?

Anyone knows how to fix up a 5.1 sound system for iMac? I realise they don't have a sound card and creative doesn't have a driver for mac OS so wonder anyone here encounter such issue and resolved it.

true... but it also gives you game playing options.

those that migrated from Windows to Mac can transfer the license over right?

M-Audio was making external cards for Macs but I'm not sure their current situation. Creative had another external device that was earlier compatible with Mac OS X. The previous time Creative put a Mac version together, they didn't update the software ever so it went to the dustbin.

It's probably not legal, but Microsoft wants to keep Windows going no matter what. :dunno: :bsmilie:

I lost my iphone
now totally can't cope with the normal type of phones.
conclusion: iphone is the best

Hmmmm this is quite bad as even with the creative external device the speaker can only function as a 2.1

the mac dvd player app is software region-protected so you need Region X to reset the count, which will only work if you dvd drive is already set to region-free. most if not all dvd drives (not players) sold are not region-free. you will need to patch the firmware to make it region-free. this is of cos not without risks.

see the following links if you dare to patch:

my suggestion is to leave the superdrive alone and get an external dvd drive and patch that drive to region-free.

alternatively, use VLC to view the dvd or Handbrake (which needs VLC installed) to rip the dvd to other formats.

those who have problems with VLC, can you list the VLC version and dvd titles that grind?

Note: i have problems with VLC 1.03 but not 0.9.10.

The internal PCI card Creative made only went to 4.0, which was ridiculous but the price was equivalent to a 5.1 card.

Since I only recently got this MacBook, I'm using VLC 1.0.3 with region 1 and region 3 DVDs. The drive is set for region 2. Anything but region 2 makes the grinding sound.

Unfortunately, Handbrake now requires VLC to decode the video, so it may be unable to do anything differently.

Just what I need. Haha. How do we know if an external DVD drive is region free?

I did rip almost all my DVDs using Mac The Ripper except for a few of them where it says some error like cannot read VOB n stuffs. Just wondering ... is it the same if I copy the two folders in the DVD into my HDD? Not trying to make copies but thinking of copying/ripping all my DVDs into a HDD and then get something like a WD TV HD to play them on my TV (instead of having to shove in DVDs all the time)

Thanks for the reply.

As for the 2 folders, I did try with a couple of DVDs. The I used the DVD Player to open that folder ... it seems to play. That's of course not talking about different region ones.

I'm struggling to see if I can flash the firmware for the drive to a region free one. Lots of info online but the darn 'flasher' software to extract the firmware doesn't seem to work. Duh.
