actually, i was talking about the grip for portrait shots, not about battery lifespan. my battery lasts me pretty well on shooting trips.

How would you expect a battery grip to perform?

Just attaches on, holds two batteries, gives a vertical release, AE lock and AF point select buttons, and an added dial for exposure setting adjustment. It also provides added shooting comfort when shooting in portrait orientation.

Think that's all though...

Obviously it'll add some bulk so if compactness is an issue, then this may be a no-go.

On the other hand, if the camera is kinda small for your hand the battery grip can increase the ergonomic factor for you.

Apparently (at least when I was on a 30D, but I'm quite sure it applies to the 450D), the AA battery cartridge is meant only for emergency use. You aren't going to get a battery lifespan anywhere near that of the Li-Ion cells.

Actually, if u use the AA battery cartridge with rechargeable NiMH batteries, the juice per charge can last more than one Li-ion cell. I'm using 6x AA Sanyo Eneloop AA batteries on the 450D battery grip.... works excellent.

6x 1.2V AA NiMH batteries = 7.2V (2000 mAh).
1x 7.4V Li-ion cell = 7.4V (1080 mAh)

But I'm not sure how much voltage drop of the NiMH would be perceived as out-of-juice by the camera (note the 0.2V difference above). Since Canon designed the AA battery cartridge, I suppose they know people are going to use NiMH on them. (yes, I know Canon did say to use AA batteries for emergency use only.... but they must be referring to alkaline AA

I try to make it a point only to recharge when it's dead, which is why it's good to have a spare. However, Li-Ion batteries have no memory effect, so if you need a full-charge the next day, but your battery isn't flat yet, there's no harm in charging it.

They are referring to the 50mm f/1.8 II, a fixed focal lens (also known as a prime lens).



Not true. The right choice ≠ the popular choice. The right choice is the one that works for you. Since you have found that the 450D works for you, then you probably have made the right choice.

Also, you don't buy a lens because it's highly recommended; you buy a lens when you need one. Hence I suggest not buying the lens and playing with your kit lens first. Again, remember, popular/highly recommended does not mean it works for you.



Not sure if you are aware, but CMOS technology is actually noisier by nature, but thanks to Canon (and now also Nikon) developing good image processing from the time the light hits the sensor to the time an image is saved, you get lower noise images. That said, there is also a limit to how much noise can be cleaned up as you squeeze more pixels onto a sensor of the same physical size.

congrats on the purchase, welcome to the canon family, and the 450D family, i will suggest you to try out your kit lenses before you buy anything else.

the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS are very good lenses for starters, it covers almost everything you will need and they are really cheap. Find out the focal range you used most and invest the lenses that can help you most to deliver the best quality photos. And before that you should get all the basics right, understand shutterspeed, aperature and most importantly exposure. You can read up books from the library, ask the fellow CSers, take up a course or join up some gathering to gain more knowledge.

For you information i am also new! brought my first DSLR 450D at may for taiwan trip, dont be afraid to ask or join us in gatherings, we are all here to learn from each other.
Enjoy photography! but seriously dont get affected by the BBB virus first, know what you will need most before investing money into it. have fun.

actually i'm quite happy with the kit-lens......lucky i did not trade-in with the L-lens (costing $1100) during my purchased. I will slowly read and find out more from the user here before deciding my next lens.

yes, i also looking forward to a newbies outing / gathering organise by CS.

I think it is probably better to think ahead and get a 40L/50L one if you are more likely to buy more lens than not, otherwise you will be stuck with a 30L box after you upgrade. Maybe cheaper this way also.

I'm not sure about memory effect of NiMH batteries... u'll have to google and find out the answers. For me, I just use until the juice goes out. On 450D, once the juice drops below full charge as indicated on camera LCD, soon after the camera will say to replace batteries, ie. refuse to work until u replace.

For me, I alternate between using the AA batteries and the Li-ion (1 piece), and either way gives me enough shots for a day outing, or even a week. So no need to be too concerned about recharging after coming home lor.

I'm using the same grip BG-E5. The battery grip is not a charger... you'll have to take out the batteries and use Sanyo charger or other brand u prefer. Same goes to the Canon Li-ion battery.... you'll have to take it out and use on Canon battery charger.

I think the original battery can lasted 400-500 shots if not using LCD screen which i think is good enough.

Well, it will be heavier definitely. However, I find the weight with the Grip of a good weight.
I used 2 Li-Ion batteries. Have not tried with the 6 AA Batteries.
More stability and just feels better!
Not forgetting the looks with the battery grip! Woot!
