The original battery grip for the 450D is around $185-$190 now. According to thread here.

The compatible one from Phottix, cost about $55++USD.
Even better, the battery grip + 2 compatible batteries cost only about $62++USD. :bsmilie:

Well, it will be heavier definitely. However, I find the weight with the Grip of a good weight.
I used 2 Li-Ion batteries. Have not tried with the 6 AA Batteries.
More stability and just feels better!
Not forgetting the looks with the battery grip! Woot!

Maybe will buy this for the extra grip .... w/o the 6 AA batteris shud be much lighter. you're right, it look quite nice with the grip - like holding the D40.

Yea not forgetting its more comfortable while doing portrait shots. ;)

$185-$190 is quite reasonable.....how much is the price for 6 AA batteries - additional $20-30?

Anyone here bought or use a remote control on your 450D? Can tell me the price and where to get?

Haha Yes using the Canon RC-1 for the 450D. Price is around 35+++ ? Cant remember as bought quite a while back. You can get from reputable camera shops. An item like this should not be that hard to get ;)

You can try get Sanyo Eneloop AA batteries from the brother here at good pricing (I got mine from retail shop though): http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=376106

But you'll also need a battery charger ah.

Using AA batteries definitely is heavier... good only if u have spare AA batteries around and don't wish to make more purchases (Li-ion batteries).

According to instructions that come with the battery grip (BG-E5), I quote:
  • If only one battery pack is used, it may be inserted in either the right or left sides.
  • If two battery packs are inserted, power is supplied simultaneously by both battery packs. Two battery packs with different charging levels can be inserted and used without any problems.
So, it appears that yes.... you can probably mix OEM battery with original battery.

Will it be too heavy to hold with the Grip? I thought the Grip can also charge the Li-on battery inside the camera when plug in.

No, you cannot re-charge any battery (AA nor Li-ion) with the battery grip (BG-E5)... you'll have to use the relevant battery charger.

The battery grip is not that heavy, and it is also helpful to balance body against longer / heavier lens. The beauty of it is you can choose not to use battery grip at times when you want a very light setup to bring along.

Another tip, from my own little experience:
  • use a hand strap
A hand strap (simple padded type, not sure about those glove type) is very comfortable to hold the camera with, stretched arm hanging at your side when the camera is not in use.. even for long periods of time. You can use a neck strap with a hand strap at the same time, but I took out the neck strap altogether... simply because I find the neck strap getting in the way in handling.

I use a "Matin" brand hand strap (about S$20 or less, can be found in local camera shops) which attaches one end to the strap mount eyelet on the 450D and the other end screw on to the tripod socket. Yes, a tripod socket is still available directly below (ie. position not shifted nor offset), and you can still attach a tripod when using this hand strap.

This could be better than Canon E1 hand strap only because Canon E1 hand strap requires both ends to be strap mount eyelets, using one of the strap mount eyelet available on the battery grip. Consequently, now at times if you want to use your camera without the battery grip, you won't be able to use the Canon E1 hand strap anymore. Whereas you still can, if using a hand strap that screws on to the tripod socket of the camera. And what more... it costs less than the Canon E1 hand strap.

Any other experiences from brothers here ah?

The weight is a personal preference. Some will like it, some will not. Go and try if you wanna be sure.

The grip cannot charge batteries with the camera plugged in. It's been said twice on this thread already.
