the bokeh of 17-50mm or 28-75mm f/2.8 cannot be compared to bokeh of 50mm f/1.7, even wehn shoot at f/2, if you really like good bokeh for portrait shoot and good pricing, this is the lens to go, it's way cheaper than 17-50mm or 28-75mm f/2.8. By using prime lens, learn to zoom with your feet  But for sure for fast pacing indoor event shoots, 17-50mm is the lens to go.

Another choice for cheap low light wide angle shoot is Sigma 28mm f/1.8, the bokeh is not too good, but still better than the other 2.

I don't foresee 2nd hand fullframe Sony DSLR price will go below S$2000 in 2 year times

yup....i think the bokeh of the 2 lens i am considering wun be exceptional but at the time being, i think i will use my cam for more indoor event shoots than portrait shots. so i guess the 17-50mm will be good buy and to replace my kit lens....

mmm.....comparing the sigma 28mm f/1.8 with the km 50mm f/1.7 with the sony 50mm f/1.4, how will u rank the bokeh? any idea how much the sigma cost? (i passed up 2 offers for the km 50mm f/1.7 due to lack of funds...)

haha.....that's why i dun consider the full-frame when buying the lens now... :embrass:

Well, currently im using the tamron 17-55 f2.8. It functions pretty well at F2.8. very low light lens. however, sharpness is compromised as many people have been raising issues abbout the tamron lens not being sharp at f2.8. bought mine for about $660 from John. Not so sure about KM, but nikkor has a 50mm f1.8 prime lens at roughly $170-$190. good and cheap! next lens for me would definately be the 70-200 VR.. steep though :)

17-55? do they still sell this lens now?

Not very sure when compare 50mm f/1.4 & f/1.7, f/1.4 is definitely better at wide open f/1.4 compare to f/1.7 (2/3 stop), but if both at f/2 or higher, it may be hard to tell. Now Sony is using Zeiss coating which tend to assorb light better, I guess it may produce better contrast than older KM lenses.

50mm bokeh is definitely better than 28mm one, at the same aperture. It just that 28mm can capture wider background shots, plus less prompt to camera shake due to shorter focal length.

oops. my bad. its 17-50.

haha...i tot got extra 5mm zoom somewhere....:sweatsm:

From what I read, shoud be, the Sony lens coating (even for DT lenses) is purplish compare to KM greenish or other coating, while Zeiss coating is also purplish, so most of us are guessing it's zeiss coating. Although no one have done any scientific test on it.

If you can find a good copy of the 17-50 that has no de-centering issues and focuses properly, it's great. The chance of landing with a decent copy of the 28-75, on the other hand, is 20% or less.

Hmmm...hey bro, how does one check for de-centering issues and focus issues of a lens? In short how to check for a good copy?:D

asked at the sony gallery. there is no zeiss coating for the DT lens....... if there is, i believe they will advertise it loudly also.

also, played with the prime lens 50mm f1.4 and 28mm f2.8. the 50mm f1.4's bokeh is WOW....at least a lot better than what my lens can give....

You can get 2nd hand KM 50mm f1.7 at below $200 ... quite easily in B/S. New ones last time cost $230-ish.

Back to topic, I bought my tamron 17-50 at $650, the 2nd hand piece a few posts up is quite a good price I would say, for a few months old lens. (if i am not wrong there is 3 year local warranty for local pieces so effectively you are getting 2yr+ warranty.. you can check if that set has warranty)

Have to ask those bro with a zeiss lens to compare with Sony lens

Minolta 50mm f/1.7 lens are selling around $200 or lower for 2nd hand lens, as pointed out by bro rOnGrEn.

Anyone has any experience using Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 on a crop body for covering weddings?

at 28mm on 1.5x crop factor = 42mm, it's not really wide. But depend on your shooting style, you may still need a wider lens for group shots.
