how about comparing Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 to Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8, I think this will be very fair comparison rather than comparing it to 28-75mm

Is there any of u tried Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8?

Call OP last time and they told me its one year shop warranty. ;)

OP imported lens doesnt comes with official warranty therefore only inhouse warranty for 1 year is it?

local set tamron comes with 3 years warranty by default i guess...

I've read a few online reviews about the Tokina but it doesn't seem so fantastic. It's biggest weakness is in CA control at wide open aperture. CA is one of the things that I hate most... So for me, the more expensive Tokina 16-50 is out, although it has a 1mm wide-angle advantage.

Till today I still cannot decide on which fast lens to buy. The Tamron 17-50 remains a strong favourite. But the 28-75 provides a better reach at the expense of the wide end. I'm also looking at Sigma 24-70 & the older Tokina 28-70 f2.6-2.8. The Sigma has a very good range, but I'm a bit concern about the 'signature' yellow tint. The Tokina 28-70 provides the same coverage as the Tamron 28-75, but is much heavier.

A summary of the 4 favourite affordable fast lens for amateur photographers:

1) Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Good: New, sharp, 17mm, good flare control, good low light IQ, more consistent QC
Bad: 50mm only, DSLR only

2) Tamron 28-75 f2.8
Good: Sharp, 75mm, good flare control, good CA control (3 LD glasses)
Bad: 28mm, less consistent QC (more lemon copies)

3) Sigma 24-70 f2.8
Good: 24mm, 70mm, pro lookalike, sharp (>f4), warmer colour tone (yellow tint)
Bad: Weight, 82mm filter size, EX coating (peeling), yellow tint, less sharp @ f2.8

4) Tokina 28-70 f2.6-2.8
Good: Build quality, 70mm, IF (fixed lens length), lens presense, sharp (>f4)
Bad: 28mm, Weight, cooler colour tone, only 2nd hand available

My current gears are: 18-55 kit lens, 50/f1.8, 70-300G, 80-200/f2.8, sb600. I'm now using a borrowed 18-70, which coupled with the sb600, forms a good & sharp combination. When I look back at the EXIF of my previous pictures, I notice that I shot lesser in the range from 18 - 24mm. Hence, I begin to lean towards the 24/28 - 70/75 range. But looking at those group shots and landscape shots that were taken at 18mm, I would recall how handy the wide-angle range can be. Now I'm really torn between the long and short focal ranges... To complicate the dilemma, my new sb600 also makes me ponder if I should get a f2.8 lens...

Perhaps I'm still too 'young' in this hobby to make a sound decision. For those seasoned photographers & hobbyists, may I have your advice & opinion on which fast lens I should buy to complement my existing gears?

(or maybe there'll be a 17-70/f2.8 soon?? :) )

Yah, like tat may as well buy from CP or AP with 3 yrs warranty. I don't seem to trust OP 1 yr shop warranty.

I got a Lemon Tamron 28-75 f2.8. So I send it b 2 Tamron n they send it b 2 Japan 2 service e lens. Came b only 3-4 weeks later.

Last 2 weeks I was testing up to 12 lenses.
Including the Tamron 28-75, Sigma 17-70, Sigma 18-200 OS.
Of them I liked the 28-75 for its reach (and FF compatibility), as there are dedicated wide angle like the Tokina 12-24. At that time the Tamron 17-50 was out of stock.

But in the end I still prefer a Canon lens.

its not that bad now... I got a good copy on my first lens. ;p

so fortunate. i went to test the 17-50 wanted to get one. went to MS Color, brought my lappy... tested on their camera on my sd card.. checked on computer.. from 17 to 30+ to 50mm at wide open.. not sharp at all.

salesman had 4 more copies of lenses but didnt offer to take out to let me try/check. so i gave up and.. tada.. no lense.

any where else where they will patiently let me test a few copies?

I am seriously considering getting the Tamron 17 -50mm F2.8 (canon mount). What do you guys think? Is it a good walk around lens? Is the cost of this lens easy on the wallet(i have a water tight budget)?
What's the current price of this lens? Where could i get the best deal on this lens locally(in singapore)?
Appreciate if you guys/gals could give some insightful advice :)

No lah...;p I have not bought the DSLR yet. Currently i have been trying to search for a lens to go with the camera. Tamron 17 -50mm F2.8 seems like a good choice. I just receive the quote from MS C for $660. I am hoping to get both the camera and lens this week. Not too sure if a good deal will pop up in B & S for this lens during this week.

Btw, what happened to your Tamron 28-75 f2.8?
