When shoot wide open at f2.8 at night, what else do you expect? Like what Ortega said, stop down and you should have less of such problem.

For a $500+ (ok, i got grey, $600+ local) lens, this lens is very value for money, me no complaints.

If you have to step down inorder to get a decent shot, why the need for f2.8 lens?

Cannot quite say that la... When you get a non-constant f2.8 lens, ie f3.5-4.5, chances are you will have to stop down even more to be comparable to most constant f-stop lenses.

So, F2.8 gives you reasonable results at F4, F5.6, a similar consumer zoom lens f3.5-4.5 would probably start to be good at around F5.6, F8 onwards, etc. At the end of the day, you still lose a good f-stop.

Having said that, it's undeniable that there are many lenses which are very sharp wide open. The Canon 70-200 series are a very good example... Whether at F4 or F2.8, they perform better wide open than most other lenses even when stopped down.

Hi,

Is this lens a fixed aperture at f2.8?
Pls advise how to vary the aperture if it is fixed one?

Thanks

You can varies aperture through your camera setting.
Fixed aperture means throughout the zoom range of the lens,
the maximum aperture size do not change. Variable aperture
means throughout the zoom range of the lens, it changes.
Because it is easier to build a lens which has variable aperture
throughout the zoom range, is it much cheaper than a fixed
aperture lens.

Fixed aperture means the maximum aperture you can shoot at is f/2.8 at all focal lengths. It doesn't mean you can only shoot at f/2.8. You can stop down the aperture to f/4, f/5.6, f/8 and so on.

Have no regrets getting this lens. Besides the price advantage over the Nikon 17-55mm F2.8, it's lighter as well. I don't depend on photography for a living so cannot justify the investment for the higer end Nikon.

I bought this as backup to 17-55 and so far loving it. No regrets. Sharing same filter size as my old 18-70mm so filters all can co-share. Its a gd lens for walkabout as well.

Lords $580~650 but no stock
CP $720
MS $699
Alan ~$650 but no stock

Yah, I am waiting for Alan to get their stock in, but so far no news.

Orient Photo selling grey set $600-$620, 3yrs shop warranty. Wonder if should go for grey set.

Think its the misnomer that is confusing everyone here.

It should be termed 'constant aperture' instead.

Sorry for the OT: Is Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 as good?

The Tamron 17-50 is out of stock in Alan Photo (both SLS and Funan), Cathay, Lord's, TK.

So those looking for this lens can save the trouble and give these shops a miss.

it depends on what mount also rite? or both N and C mount all not available?

OK, paiseh, I assumed people see my signature will think that I am refering to nIKON mount. I will be more distinct in future and understand that there are other mounts around. I shall not discriminate against any mounts or any way people like to mount others so as to achieve hapiness, prosperity and progress for our nation!
