What abt the Tokina 16-50 f2.8?

the tokina has got purple CA
while the Tamron has got blue CA

I prefer the blue

but the tokina has got the 1mm exta on the wide side

tamron is cheaper

so if you don't shoot high contrast pictures and have the budget, get the tokina
but if you do shoot high contrast pictures and/or less budget get the tamron

if you also like to do some macro shots and like to tele end, then get the sigma

Did you got the tokina one? Any reviews?

no , as i said i prefer the blue CA
so i bought the tamron 17-50

but it feels plasticky like a toy
that makes it lighter as well

so i guess you cannot have everything

I will do a image test with the Nikon 18-70 kit lens
and post the results

i bought tamron17-50 f2.8..

why ah?
A: i wan bokeh ! hahaha.. tt all.

focusing abit slow
noise, abit loud nia hahaha
sharpness, is there .
soft, still ok!

I dont get the point of this particular post. What do you mean by "why ah? i wan bokeh", and "sharpness, is there. soft, still ok!"

Hi guys, just curious if any of the people here using this lens(nikon mount) has vignetting issues wide open?

Heres an image I took with my D80+Tamron 17-50@2.8+hoya pro1D(low profile) UV filter:
DSC_0405.jpg

NOTE: this was after PS'ing to reduce the vignetting, which ended up giving an overall blown image, and yet the upper left corner is still dark...

I noticed it gets very obvious when the surroundings are relatively bright @2.8, and it can get pretty irritating/obvious. I can solve the "problem" by stepping up the aperture or by zooming in a little to remove the vignetting, but I just wanna know if its "normal".

THanks!

awaiting your tests with much anticipation!
it would be very helpful.
thanks!

I've came across discussion that the Tamron 17-50 has backfocus problem, am I right? Does it happen with the assembled in China copies or Made in Japan copies?

thanks for the info...
yes the price diff is quite a bit for the tamron and the tokina...guess it is to justify for the built quality then...
find the tamron too plasticky...

after thinking about the testing process, i wondered if i could get hold of
the tokina, nikon and the sigma lens for a shootout

what do you ppl think?

I would like to do the test this saturday
anybody has the other lenses, can loan me the lens for a quick test

i have secured the

• Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC
• SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF)
• Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G

now i just need the AF 16-50mm F2.8 • AT-X 165 PRO DX to complete the set for the shootout

You can actually selectively raise the vignetted areas in photoshop, by using either Feather with a rectangular marquee, or using a elleptical marquee around the normal area, then selecting the inverse (here you should end up selecting the corners) and raising them.

Because it is a cropped-sensor-only lens, I would believe that the vignetting is quite normal, at wide open aperture, under specific conditions, such as those in your photo.

However, you may want to remember not to shoot a wide angle landscape shot with f/2.8. ;)

Sigma has released a HSM version of the 17-50. Wonder if any changes to quality.

Thank you for the explanation! Just wanted to know if its "normal", which I'm guessing is the case. Yup, should have just stepped the aperture higher I guess :embrass:...

initial test - focal lenght difference

Nikon 18-70 f3.5~4.5 and Tamron 17-50 f2.8

T17f8.jpg

N18f8.jpg

as you can see the 1mm on the wide end makes a difference
and the 20mm on the tele end really makes a difference

the colours from the tamron has more contrast and is more punchy

after this short test, i managed to get my hands on a sigma 18-50 f2.8
so i decided to do a side by side test with all 3 lenses

it would be good if i had a tokina 16-50 f2.8 to test as well

Thanks for the time!
Great test you did.. can help to visualize better!

Why not throw in the Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8? See how much difference does the extra $1k+ make.
