Congratulations. You're going to witness a family in making. Very good luck for your new year.
#3 is so macho.

Thanks Esther. First time in my life to be called "macho"....:embrass: but sorry I am just an ordinary guy whom you will pass me by on the street without even noticing ...

Hi to all,

The cute Xiao Huang (female) has laid her eggs ( I think!). My wife saw her sitting inside her nest with her beak jutting out all day long. When I came back from work at about 9pm, I could vaguely see her beak too... how exciting. For now, I think I better not disturb her and leave her alone. Will keep you guys updated.
Cheers.
Raymond

Raymond,Confirm that she already laid her egg (or eggs). For the next 14 days ,you won"t expect much activities. Once a while, she will take her break for feeding.BTW she will remain in the nest even at night.

Hi Alan,
Yes, you are right. She was there whole night. I saw her beak this morning before leaving for work at 6.30am.
Raymond.

u are very lucky my friend, This is the season for the sunbird nesting, it will take about 1 - 2 weeks for the egg to hatch. It leaves the nest for about 1 week after completion. Dont make it stress.

Singapores very own sunbird hatching documentary in still motion...! ;)

Thanks for updating..

Waiting for more and more... :D

I'm waiting for more! This is like.. Balcony Geographic!

Just came across this thread..

It would be interesting if you can setup your camera and laptop for remote capture, like once every hour,(and maybe shorter interval if there is activity), then you could have documented the whole nest building process.

Also, the window could be left open for better picture quality. As the pre-focused camera stays mounted on the tripod and is motionless, there is little risk of scaring away the birds when pictures are taken.

Just a humble suggestion:)

Two cute Olive Backed Sunbirds decided to make my balcony their home. They started to build their nest at the bamboo plant outside my balcony.

Photo taken inside my house and behind the lightly tinted glass sliding door so as not to disturb and scare them away. Setting: ISO 100, 200mm, f4.5, 1/400s on tripod.

Most pictures turn out to be not as sharp and colour not as rich. Wonder any advice how to take good pictures in this kind of situation? I am sure they will return tomorrow so more chances to capture them.

Thanks.
Ray

Hi RayTravis,
Don't pressurized me. I am no pro in this.. just hope to see a happy birdie family doing well.
Wish them well!

Updating? Sure, will do that when the chicks are hatched... In fact, one clubsnapper has pm me that he wants to come to take photo once that happens - of course I welcome him as I think I could learn from his experience.

This ain't any Bal Geo or Nat Geo, my friend.... just one ordinary guy enjoying the unfolding the gift of life from nature, at the right time and at the right place, thats all...

Hi Limsgp

Thanks for your suggestion. Remote capture? don't think I know how to do that. Also to leave the sliding door open might scare the birds away - I did that once and I saw them coming and stopping by at the ledge of the balcony and flew off - so I think better not.
Also for the position of the nest, it is almost impossible to put the camera and tripod there. See photo how I squeezed myself to take a closeup shot:

im not pressuring you... :bsmilie:

I just want to see it again.. The building of nest then the hatching of eggs..
I had sunbirds built a nest before in my previous home..
Back then i was just merely 8 years old.. Many many many years back..

After the eggs hatched, being a small kid, i went and took one of the eggs to show to my neighbour.. Hid it in pocket.. When i wanted to bring it out of my pocket,
it was destroyed..! the shell is sooo soft..! :dunno:
Then i realised that there were only 1 egg in the nest and that was the only egg that i destroyed..

And the sunbird never get its egg to hatch..
I feel so sad to even think of what i did..

I was.. soo stupid.. i crushed maybe their one n only chance to have a little sunbirdie...

And thats why i want to see the little sunbirds from your balcony.. hoping to see them sticking their heads out of their nest while parents find them food... :D

Hmm.. if open the window only it might appear like a big "hole" or black cave.. probably a bit scary to the birds

but you have a curtain rite.. maybe hiding the camera beside the cover of the curtain might help.

haha, have to wait for one more week.I am also following this thread.

Hi knpan and alan,

Sorry guys for the lack of updates. Basically the female started to sit in her nest since last Friday. She came and went a few times in the day but stay put the whole night. This was the same till today so not sure has she laid her eggs or not, and when are the eggs hatching. I did not get too much of shots as she went straight into her nest and with her beaks showing - nothing much to take.
I am sure situation would be different when the chicks are hatched and the parents come to feed. I have just bought a 2nd hand 400mm f5.6L to capture the feeding moment.... Will keep you guys updated.

Cheers..

Thanks for the update.

i think 2 weeks will be just nice, from the day it laied the egg
