Sony - RX1

Brought an overseas friend to try out this RX1, but no stocks everywhere. Most shops claim stocks will only come end of the month. And it is normally 1-2 sets only.

SLR Revo, MScolor, Alan Photo, Cathay Photo, Sony Stores at Funan, ION, all no stocks.

Think Sony still not producing fast enough to meet the heavy demand.

Looking forward to X100s as well, but there will be still be a difference between full frame and APS-C.

I already have a full frame M9P, and really like the form factor of X100. Any news when the X100s will be out? 2-3months time?

On the other hand, having a full frame sensor really makes a huge difference.... Maybe X100Z will have full frame like RX1?

If there is an x100z, it will look just like the m9 .......

DxOMark result for RX1 is out.

Score pretty high (higher than the A99)
see comparison here

Amazing how they succeeded to score lower than the D600 in low-light ISO.

Not really... the d600 can be tested "without lens" after all. And the ISO rating is an odd scale - half the ISO score indicates -1/3 ev so the few hundred points are actually within a margin of error.

Also, remember that Nikon traditionally has a weaker AA filter. This means better digital ISO noise, but less accurate color separation, which is why I still prefer the prints from Sony. :-)

Yap, for me i take DxOMark test with a pinch of salt.
Particularly for low-light iso test i more believe in my own eye observation of the sample images hence i'm still waiting for more details review of dpreview for RX1 so i can compare the image side by side.

When I press zoom in when reviewing the photo, it always goes into 100% (I guess). I cannot find any setting to reduce the amount of zoom.

Does anyone know if I can choose the magnification factor when pressing the zoom in button when reviewing the photo?

To change the zoom factor (zoom in or out), try rotating the control wheel (the one that you press to move the focus point.

i think he was asking if there is a way to change the mag factor so when the button is pushed it's not always 100%.

LOL I always loved that it was 100% by default... Drove me crazy on Nikon bodies how many didn't have that option. :P

Yes, you are right. In Nikon dslr, I can select the default magnification. Zooming to 100% gives me one block of image, which is not useful. Then I need to rotate to zoom out a bit. It's like I am trying to see if the nose is sharp when I take a portrait. Instead it may zoom into a white patch.

yes i know what you mean coz that feature is super useful in Nikon world. I find the RX1 zoom is hassle like you said it zooms in too much to one spot only and that spot is not always what we want to see. i hope there is a way around this and if not well... it don't matter too.

Bought my RX1 from Sony Store last week. Really like the full frame sensor and Zeiss lens, but holding it makes me feel very fragile maybe because I have bigger hands. Is there such a thing like hand grip that I have seen on RX100 for RX1?

The "thumbsup" is quite nice but it will cover the hotshoe and it is VERY expensive. Not sure how much better will it help with the grip though. Any buddies here can share your experience? Saw an original thumbsup, and it is very well made - written as Made in Japan.

Also learning to use this camera for a few days now. Really used to cameras with viewfinder... finds it weird to shoot just by looking at the LCD screen. May have to try out the EVF/OVF. Any buddies have used a OVF and is the bracketing accurate?

Look at the click cameras thread. They have the Gariz leather case for rx1. For cheaper options, ebay

By answering your question, I will repeat my feed backs in my earlier post and risk another round of war of words. :p

But here I go.

When I started using RX-1, I feel that the pictures I took have higher chances of getting slight movement blur. I have no problem shooting camera of this size as I do shoot Fujifilm X100 using the LCD and do not encounter much slight movement blur. But there is a thumb rest on X100.

I tried the thumb rest from Sony. It makes taking picture more stable and the feel is great. Love the great construction and the ability to lock thumb rest to avoid it moving or coming off.

For the electronic view finder, it allows you to bring the camera closer to you when taking pictures. This results in more stable shot.

So any of the two will help to improve stability when shooting pic. Lastly, try to get the half-case for better grip and easier acces to SD card and battery.

A soft release also helps.

shot through windscreen.
