So why Sony?

To be fair...i never see any kit lens(other brands) that are so bad that render itself unusable.
only lousy photographers

Yes, besides just comparing and siding with equipment, need to know that photographer skill is very important. After seeing the LX3's IA mode do its magic stuff, it's actually easier to go horribly wrong with complex machines like a DSLR. If something goes wrong, it's mostly always the photographer at fault, not the camera.

I agree with your comments. When a picture turns out not as nice or when someone complains about the limitation he is facing with the camera, people will give comments that it's his fault and not the camera.

But when companies launch new cameras, everyone is eager to upgrade.

So now, is it really a photographer issue or camera issue? If so, then why the need for so many to rush to upgrade or complain of no new cameras to upgrade to? :dunno:

hi all,

I interested in getting a DSLR soon. Is it cheaper to get in australia or Sg? most prolly able to claim 10% tax refund if the camera is gotten overseas.

would sony A300 be a good entry level camera for me to start with? Is there a big difference between A300 and A200?

Sony Alpha DSLR-A300 Twin Kit (18-70mm & 55-200mm) Digital Camera - International Warranty@ AUD846 + shipping prabablly another $90
or A200 at $960?

Also... what about imported and local set?

thanks for your advice!

There's some bashing on the net about Sony's SSS system, about how it might get outdated if there are future updates while for C and N users can stay updated even though they're using a very old system. =/

Thats a funny thing for them to say. Things are always improving be it in terms of sensor quality, lens design and even image-stabilisation systems. And in every brand, the lens will outlast the bodies.

People change camera bodies, especially digital bodies, more often than they change lenses. Hence, since Sony uses in-body IS, Sony users will benefit from better IS when the technology improves and is implemented in newer camera models. Thats why a lot of us still benefit from IS when we use old Minolta and third-party lenses.

With the new models announced, you may want to wait a while more and get the newer models. There are some new brochures at Sony Style shops and Cathay which I happened to walked past just now and the may be some promos with the GSS coming.

why sony? because i have sold my entire canon equipments XD
so my psp,ps3,bravia,sony ericsson can meet with their brother alpha lolz
jk.. the main reason last time is because of the flash system and the sharpness. I can get 3 flashes without buying another trigger.

 would there going to be new models for sony's entry level dslr? but usually new means it will be expensive too, hoping to keep everything under 1k. And...... i wont be in Sg for GSS!!! T_T

New does not necessary mean expensive as Sony bodies holds the prices quite well, even some time after, the price is no much lesser. Of course the shops will give better prices than getting from Sony itself. If you want something below $1K, I would recommend that you get the A200 before it's being replaced or get a 2nd hand higher end model like the A300.

If I were to go for Sony it would be because of the built in stabilizer and zeiss lens.

This is a great topic to share. Before i bought my A200 mid last year, i did many research on Sony, Minolta, Carl Zeiss, Leica. Somehow all this company are part of the growing of this Sony DSLR and lens. Their Colours, AF system and all those which make me feel like Sony is new to DSLR but it does have many relations with brands like Carl Zeiss. That make me choose Sony and well, in my photography club, at that time, im the only one using Sony and they will call me, Sony boy. HAhax But well, after all, i does shoot alot with the camera. More then 5K shutter count plus and going. And im still using it as my main body and even for my work assignment. Thought of buying another A200 as my spare body. :)

Agreed with Bro Galdor.

You may balance a new A200 or a 2nd Hand A300 with Live view functions. ;) Price below 1k. Also for you can further get old Minolta lenses at cheap prices, ,like 50mm1.7 and 28mmF2.8 for prices below $200 each. WIth less than 1K, you can cover good range with Kit lens and prime lens.

;) Juz as long as you enquire and negotiate proper deals from B&S section and avoid over-priced items at a rush. You will be able to meet your budget

:)

Yup, initially I went for $650 as my budget, my friend told me not to be so rushed. I held on and got a A200 for $500

Hi Haqeel&Kelvin
thank you for the info. with such affordable price, i need to try! what do you suggest? COD or bank tranfer? if i like to get one.

Send a PM to Mcgill under "Mass Sales", you can make arrangement with him. Last time i met him at Bedok and COD

;)

Agreed bro...

Cameras to Photographers are like are Brushes to Artists. Having Picasso's brush doesn't mean you can't paint like Picasso. :sweatsm:

I don't see why there is a reason to fret too much, let them say it, concentrate on making photos is what I'd do. If the fate is states that you get acquainted with Sony (or any other brand for that matter), and you like it, if it works for you - it works for you. ;)

SSC operates 7 days a week. Not sure if C and N operates it's service centres on as many days, but it's a perk that you can drop off your equipment on the free day of your week.

Canon service centre is near vivocity. A few buildings away. Open on Monday to Friday till 7:00pm. Weekends and public holidays closed. I had the "nice" experience of finding a suitable time to drop off and collect my videocam recently.

Thanks guys for answering my questions. I am going to do some reading no. =)

I often amazed with such post....

If you haven't find the only Auto Focus CZ lenses and Sony's G lenses, In-Body Stabilising, Cheapest FF 24MP DSLR appetizing... I think there are seriously something wrong with you...

Come on guys... its just a tool.... If someone still think they can take better picture with certain brand and blaming the tool for bad pictures, such person should get a life....

how about blaming yourself if you can't get a better picture... be honest to yourself... there is nothing wrong with it...

Once you are honest to yourself and only blame yourself being incompetent to get "that" shot... you will start learning and get better shot....

Recently at a wedding... the guest ask me why I haven't got the flash on? I have to take the camera down and say.... err... my camera don't have a flash... and my couple just laugh and say, alamak... he don't shoot with flash... and that's why we use his service... Ok... I know its a joke, but seriously...

I also had another experience where a guest at a wedding reception ask me if I have forgotten to turn my flash on...... and he demand to see my camera setting... so I pass the camera to him... It was on ISO 3200 f2 at 1/30sec with SSS on..... and he says WHAT? ISO 3200???... So I just smile and move on.... I often shoot that low in wedding reception... some even at f1.4 but I have yet to go to 6400 yet.

Anyway... kind of funny that I got all sort of funny questions in Singapore.... Maybe I just have some cultural shock...

yay, thanks for the reassurance! most pple just say canon or nikon would be the best and safest choice... shall go try out the alpha someday!

didn't you ask what setup was the guest using??

Actually, all the brands out there are good, it's just the visibility created from the majority of people already using the product. The Best and Safest choice out there cannot save you from flunking your photos due to poor operator skill though. So practicing is still the most important thing to do. :D
