I chose Sony because of the Minolta DNA in the system itself and the developmental potential of the entire system. Minolta was the state of the art during the film days, and many of its technologies are unique, and some of them yet unsurpassed/matched by competing systems (STF, for example).
There are very few manufacturers on this planet with two premium lines of lenses offering different optical characteristics - it's very different from companies that offers versions of the same lens: "Got Sonic Motor, No Sonic Motor, Got IS, No IS." In Sony's case, you get two very different schools of optical performances, as well as different colour qualities straight off the camera.
I choose my lenses from the KM / G line, and thus I can retain a colour consistency throughout my entire focal length coverage.
Likewise, someone using Sony / CZ line would have a very different look and feel to their photos too.
As for both lines of lenses, the implementation of IS in the body ensures longevity and usability of the much older glasses. Older glass designs to seasoned shooters mean photos with character. Camera bodies get obsolete, but it's the glass that gives the photos part of the characteristic and part of the soul as well. The implementation of such things on the body helps ensure that the glassware stay usable and relevant in light of the newer designs of today.
As cameras themselves: The A100 is a very functional machine for an entry level - (as followed by A200, and eventually A230.) The overall usability and interface is a very important criteria for me, the Sony A700/A900 fits the bill just right, and are work great as Photographer's Cameras.
Minolta was every bit as good as Canon and Nikon, just not the marketing portion. Pentax and Olympus both make awesome machines, but they don't market as widely, why not give those brands a shot? People listen to what their friends recommend, and marketing and exposure is part of the process, and marketing DSLRs are in a way an art form in itself, and user endorsement is a big part of it. Brands that have a great user bases. So with Minolta Legacy passed onto Sony, I do hope they do better in that respect.
Fate's brought me together with Sony and KM, it could have as easily brought me to the other brands, but I'm glad that it did.
