Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM User Group

While waiting for TS to revert, i've used both and prefer the P series holder (tian ya). I use screw in filters when on holiday- less accessories to carry around lah.

Pros for screw in
- no need to mount holder
- cpl turns much easier than P series
- you can use the filter with smaller diameter lens by getting additional step up rings. 62-77mm or XX to 77mm.

Cons for screw in
- additional cost for the rings as above
- additional cost incurred when you need ND 2, 4, 8 and others which do not come cheap especially for 77mm.

Pros for P series
- same mount can be used with other tian ya filters: Gradual ND, blue, red, ND 2, 4, 8 and other colored filters
- Like the screw in type, you can get additional rings for P holder for specific lens
- it will be cheaper in the long run if you get other P series filter

Cons for P series
- additional steps for the set up compared to just screw in.
- tian ya filters may chip at the edges if you are rough with it.
- additional cost for the rings to fit other lens.

These are my personal reviews after using these 2 kinds. Its your choice I guess.

 Pretty much covered. The darkest commonly used NDs will still be the nd110, NDX400 or the lee big stopper. Haven't come across 9 or 10 stops by tianya. So you have to stick with the normal ring filters for these kind of filters.

CPL I prefer the screw in.

guys how much is this lens? i saw it online at B&H photo (US site selling for 479 USD, how is that possible! the site also have sigma 50mm f1.4 listed as 499 usd!

Guys, need another advice regarding Filter holders...
Is it necessary to get a holder which is larger than our 77mm thread in order to prevent vignetting? our Sigma thread is 77mm does it mean I need to get a 82mm adapter ring and fix onto a 82mm filter holder?

appreciate advice on this.

Its about $800+ from the shops. Local sigma warranty. Buying grey sets (overseas), you need to check if the international warranty is recognized by Sigma Singapore. There is a thread somewhere - do a search for more details.

I just bought the P series filter which holds the regular Tianya filter. The holder holds only 1 filter. No vignetting at the widest end 10mm. The normal holder for 3 filters will have vignetting.

If you are planning to get a lens with 82mm in the future, then its better to get the cokin Z series holder. I have not seen third party Z series so far.

My share.:)

When I called a few shops to enquire last month, I was quoted between S$744 to S$890 (yes, it's a wide range). This is for the lens with local warranty. Just to be sure (call me "kiasu" if you want to) I called Sigma Singapore to enquire on the warranty and to make sure these shops do indeed sell Sigma lenses with Sigma Singapore's warranty. At the same time, I checked with artworkfoto (listed in mass sales) and they're selling the grey set of the same lens (with one year warranty by the shop itself) for S$670. That's not too far away from B&H's price.

Thanks azure for the reply...

I like the distortion so much when doing landscapes. A different story for buildings and structures, though (at 10mm). Most of the time I find it hard to correct in pp. Anyone experiencing the same?

To overcome this, use a bubble level to ensure its horizontal. Minor adjustments to include more sky can be done if you are including the sky as background. Should be able to rectify the distortion in photoshop unless its too distorted.

Depending, some distortions for architecture can give a fresh perspective.

bro, did you use cokin mount or screw in filter? If use screw in filter like B+W ND110, will it produce vignetting?

Screw in. LCW Fader ND2-400 to be exact. I got the 82mm one but it still vignettes a little bit. Easy to clone out. Disappears at 12mm onwards.

 I did not encounter any vignetting with the screw in filter...was using a regular filter not the slim versions. I was using only 1 filter at a time - no stacking a CPL or ND over the UV.

Stacking 2 filters will certainly vignette. I believe a user from the earlier posting mentioned to remove the UV filter before putting the filter holder.

Technically with 82mm Z series holder, it is more than the 77mm diameter and should not vignette. Have you removed the UV filter before placing the holder on?

Yea, I take out my UV before I slap on any of my NDs (screw in or P-Series). I even get vignetting on regular UVs that's why I had to resort to using those expensive slim ones. Thinking of getting myself those Z-Series because stacking with even the wide angle P-Series holder can be quite a headache. Imagine handholding the other filters in front of the slotted one for 15-30 seconds LOL. What I do now is hold all the filters together with rubber bands. It looks stupid but effective, best of all, headache gone. :)

Could it be that the design for the Alpha mount is different from all the other mounts? Not really sure if that's the reason, or if my hypothesis is even plausible. Never bothered doing any research because it doesn't really bug me that much.

may I know the ND filter that you use?

may I know the ND filter that you use?

screw in 77mm filters that have been used with this lens:

Tianya cpl - the thickness is approximately 0.75cm. This kind http://store.tagotech.com/product_info.php?products_id=474

B+W ND110 - slightly slimmer than the above but not the slim filter type at approx 0.4cm. The ones bought from mass sales.

Both measurements were taken from edge to edge minus the screw threads as it will be flushed into the lens.

By the way, the lens was mounted on a cropped Canon body.

Saw some threads that is this lens is used on ff there will be vignetting. I think it applies to all UWA lens for ff bodies.
