Should I buy the 24-70 II or the TS-E 17?

Eh brudder, you DO realise that the NEW 24-70 beats the TS-E 24 in IQ yes? Well according to this review at least.

In answer to your other points:

2) tilt/shift to correct distortion
How badly distorted do you expect people to be with a 24-70?

3) 0.39x magnification, can be used as macro lens
Er.... Good luck with that mate. If I had wanted macro I would use a dedicated macro lens or even a Raynox converter but your money, your call.

4) tile/shift can be used to create funny effect like miniature, etc.
So can photoshop's layer mask and gradient blur but again, your money, your call.

After I saw the pictures from TS-E, I feels every shot from 24-70@24mm has unacceptable distortion. The distortion not only comes from lens, but also from the perspective, while the TS-E can control the perspective to avoid distortion.

None so blind... erm... nevermind.

Haiz... whatever float TS's boat. Why is the need of any of us keep buggering TS on his perspection, after all, none of us will change TS mind and afterall it is TS money, he can choose to spend it anyway he wanted, be it buying the Tilt-shift lens or whatever.

And to TS, just be happy with your purchase or would be purchase and have fun with photography, there really is no need to justify your purchase with any of us, because frankly speaking, it is your work, your decision and your perspection, I will not say if it was correct or not, because frankly, it does not matter. Have fun with your lens and hobby.

kind of agree with you, wonder why would someone asking opinions from total strangers in a forum,
I hardly know you and you hardly know me.

maybe just an excuse to tell their CFOs that people from CS strongly agree they have made the right choice to spend the money.. ;)

After I did some more check about the TS-E, I finally give up.

1) TS-E is used with tripod most of the time, I just give my tripod to a friend in China, and I hate to carry too much when shooting photo, it's too heavy.

2) the TS-E is too expensive, more expensive than 24-70.

3) the 24-70 is more useful when shooting people in door. Recently I realized this is very useful for me.

4) the manual focus will cause me missing some important moment.

When years later I become rich, I'm still going to get the TS-E17 to cover the ultra-wide range.

I think that the decision you've made to buy the 24-70 is a good one.

It is a great lens that will produce many fine photos for years to come.

Good choice! The 24-70 is definitely going to be more useful since you only can afford 1 lens now. :)

You should stop thinking about buying for now.

Lol... Did you even test out the tilt shifts to make a decision?

And are you sure it's much more expensive than the 24-70ii?

The TS-E 17mm is more expensive than the 24-70mm II. TS-E 24mm II should be around the price region.

what about the ef 14mm 2.8? no love for that? uwa and got nice lens hood too. :)

Since I own most of the lenses you're talking about, I'll just add my 2c, hopefully you can make a proper informed decision.

1) I shoot with the TSE most of the time without tripod, maybe 95% of my TSE shots are done like that. I hardly take architechture, but I do take landscapes. Of course it is good to have a tripod and shoot with the TSE because you can line up the shot very precisely and repeat if you find something isn't correct. Shots taken with tripod also eliminate camera shake, which is a factor when using such a heavy lens, nevertheless I have taken plenty of shots without a tripod and still get good results.

2) The TSE24II which you were considering is about the same price as the 24-70II, give or take a couple of hundred +-. So this should not be a reason to not consider this option if this is really what you want.

3) I would have to agree that the 24-70 would be more useful for shooting people. Why didn't you discover this earlier?

4) While it is true that MF lenses take some getting used to, if you are not prepared for the shot, whether it is manual or autofocus, you will miss the shot.

Having said that, given that you are fairly new to photography and TSE lenses are really a very specialised section of lenses which I would consider to be more for the advanced user, I would certainly not recommend that you get it at this instance. To use the TSE lens requires a certainly amount of patience and dedication. Of course you can use it like an normal manual lense and not use the TS functionality, but that would be an real waste of money.

All the best with your search.

I guess to TS, the difference of 200 bucks on street price between the 17 and 24-70 ii factors in as being "much more expensive"

I bought my TS-E 17mm for $3350. The 24-70mm II is going for around $2850. That's a $500 difference, unless the TS-E 17mm is cheaper now.
