SGTrekker's 7D6N Sri Lanka Vesak Day Photography Tour (13th - 19th May 2011)

Day 02
Ancident city of Anuradhapura - Sri Maha Bodhi Tree

From my limited knowledge (and half opened ears).. I think this is the 2nd generation Bodhi Tree (the original one that Buddha achieved enlightenment is in india).. The tree is very well-protected/guarded and no-one is alowed to get close to it except the monk.. I didn't get much of a shot of the tree and will wait for others to post... the only thing I got was the moonstone that I have posted earlier.

慧能 said "菩提本无树,明镜亦非台,本来无一物,何处惹尘埃。" to show his understanding of Buddha teachings.. for me, I dont have much Buddha knowledge.. but I also see no Bodhi Tree - cause block from many, many angle.. :)

Instead, a few of us captured this young monk.. Thanks to Helda for spotting him..

guess can be better if there is a little fill light to remove the shadow on face.. but for me, happy alreadi

Day 02
Ancident city of Anuradhapura - Sunset at Nuwara Wewa (lake/reservoir)

The intention was to capture the Dagada and the setting sun.. since this is the first trip to Sri Lanka for all of us.. the actual recce on ground was done on the actual day/site.. we were searching for spots around Nuwara Wewa from sun set to dusk.. (galant effort by Adrain + co-driver).. finally found a spot that can see a bit.. and we just have to make do with whatever we can see in front of us .... at the end, only four of us decided to de-bus for the shoot :) ...

guess, we just have to make do.. Dagada is little far to compose so make do and use the surroundings.. pretty nice light for about 5 mins..

End of Day 02 adventure for me :)

p.s. The place we stayed that night was NICE... I slept like the PIG till morning

nleong - joke..joke..only.. not sorry la
divinemoment - me, my england not powderful la.. NO, adrian didnt go this time - we all arrived after sunset.. all the fisherman resting and enjoying the sunset - BUT I guess we will see Adrian in his G-string and on a boat on their future trips to Sri-Lanka (participants - DO remember to capture that shot and post in CS).

Day 02
Ancident city of Anuradhapura - Ruwanweliseya Dagaba.

5760278539_f82f8dbcd6_b.jpg

A shot that works for me.. I dont know why, I told nleong that I like this when I capture and now I still like this, dont know why?.. maybe it is the line of the dagaba that leads to the monk, maybe it is the fingers posture of the monk.. at least it works for me.. any C&C here would be appreciated?.. do point out why it doesn't work for you, too much distortion?..

Thanks for posting this. As I became to learn more about you during the trip prefering to accept honest critique rather than "sweet talk", here's my stab at it:

1) I think a little level may help to boost the appeal of the photo as the overall pic looks a little wash out. It should enhance the rim glow of the dome as the rest of image becomes darker.
2) Don't think distortion has any telling or adverse effect
3) This pic weighs more to be accompanied by a caption for viewer to understand what's happening.
4) The subject appears to lean towards photo journalism where less emphasis placed on compositional aspect. So technically nothing much wrong about how you have shot it.

Hope it make some sense and pse do critique my critique if it doesn't help at all.

Bro Divinemoment - YES.. straight TALK preferred.. NOT Sweet Talk :)
1. understand the leveling part, could do that.. guess shooting with a brighter background is NOT very appealing unless the subject has MORE to offer and to bring up the INTEREST.. correct?..
2. OK
3. roger.. caption - devotees, listen.. I'm here to Teach" .. hehheee
4. got it.. more photo journalism look.. how would you compose something similar (for less journalism), concentrate only on Monk?.. moving left/right?... or totally dont shoot this shot at all?.. learning, learning, learning.. all critique are HELPFUL (if you know how to look at the positive aspect!!... at least someone willings to SAY something, that is alreadi positive)...

Maybe I got the honeymoon suite.. hehehheeheheheee...

DAVID.. CONGRATULATION!!!!!.. like what 慧能 said "菩提本无树" - YOU HAVE REACHED THE STAGE where you DONT SEE THE BODHI TREE!!! even whe you are face-to-face with the tree.. (closer to Enlightenment)... for the rest of us, mere mortal.. we see the Bodhi Tree!!!...

joke aside - I think as they said, you were concentrating on the capture of the Monkeys (when you posting your monkey shot?) and forgot about us la..

1. Very chim leh.

4. We can talk until the cows come home. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Since you like the pic, no one else should dispute it. Not even your mother-in-law !!

1. on reading back, I also dont know what I talk about..
4. if I'm the only one that find a pic nice and everyone else think it is crap!! (including monther-in-law).. then something must be wrong with my sense of beauty..

Bro divinemoment.. like only we two on this thread.. maybe discuss over email/FB.. LOL...
