SGTrekker's 7D6N Sri Lanka Vesak Day Photography Tour (13th - 19th May 2011)

Oh.. wait.. LE = long exposure haha.. :P But i like that oversaturated shots leh hehe.. tho overdone but the color sort of all transit very well.. dunno how to articulate :P english no good la
hehee, wonder why you ask what is LE..
I did saturate (add overlay/soft-light layer) quite a bit to emphasis the shadow.. didnt clear my QC at the end.. so didn't post.... (until I see Divinemoment shot and wanted to show my shot as a comparsion.. )

I have noticed the family members standing still and letting the waves wash up their feets... I should have done some LE shots.. just not imaginative enough.. on highsight.. LE definitely more impactful...

Thanks. I was taking a risk at 4s exposure and hope they remained still and they appears to read my mind. Ha ha. At same time, I also prefered not too long exposure as I wanted to capture some blur motion of those kids playing behind them. So 4s seems a good compromised.

Your pic has great potential if not because of the blown sun.

You were thinking as you shoot.. that is the discipline that I need to learn.. my current style is find a good spot and shoot at same spot until I'm tired.. I guess I must move my butts and walk around a little more...

For my pic - I would have just chop off at the horizon.. but there is the water-break barrier on the right.. so that part also no go.. which is why I decided this pic no go.. failed QC.. hehhehee

Ah Clem ah, Clem... the emaciated, cachectic look.. very much like Gautama Buddha when he was wasting himself away during his phase as an ascetic.

How cum your vocap so powderful huh?

Still at Negombo beach or Brown beach (ClemC - care to comment as I can't verify in goole map)

Overlooking Indian Ocean, the 3rd largest.

Very nice composition and colours. Artistic.

Last one to share at Negombo.

This fisherman suddenly became our model and he humbly and gladly posed for quite a while for a few of us to shoot. Shirtless under the blazing sun, that rugged body seems well seasoned and toned thru the years. I believed his quite handsome in his younger days.

Day 02
Ancident city of Anuradhapura - Ruwanweliseya Dagaba.

Spend quite a bit of time with the Monk and his Audience. THe audience was seated in a shaded area and listening to the Buddhist teachings (I assumed) that the Monk was preaching to them.. End up with a few portrait shoots.. of monks and audience (I only know how to photograph old man/old ladies, the lines on their face/hands and their whitish hair is what I like to work with)

I think most of us end up with a Bluish cast as the Dagoda (with fresh paint) did a very good of reflecting the bluish sky).. not corrected here :)

Tried to correct a bit here.. hope it works

I wanted to take from this angle but was too lazy to walk over there. Now I see it, I regret and repent. Good photo journalism! The preacher surely knows to create poise and uphold his standing is to sit sideway facing the audience instead of Abraham Lincoln style.

And all the 3 portraits do depict emotions !

The Oruva boats were one of my top “To Do” shooting list for this trip but it remained elusive for quite a period of time. Some were spotted out far at sea that went beyond my 280mm reach. But Professor Murphy didn't stick around with SG Trekker too long this time and as we were travelling to Anuradhapura, unexpectedly we chanced upon a beach that saw fishermen launching their boats one after another against the relentless pounding waves. Looking thru the bus windows with everyone jaws dropping, Adrian did the most right thing commending the bus almost to a screeching halt for us to salvage the elusive moment. And surely ran we did.

Averagingly a 4-man team per boat, they were fealess needing no life jacket though they were out in the roaring Indian Ocean probably infested with sharks.

I was fearless too and I recounted this is my top shopping list and I never let up shooting. Turned out to be the most single subject shots of the trip. I processed it the way I have somehow visualised before embarking the trip.

Here's my rendition of 7 variations. Apologise if it bores you. Would most appreciate your honest critique.

Day 00

Let me start off by posting a shot done at Day0 (Divinemoment & me was on the earlier flight and we managed to catch a few hours of Sunlight before the day was up). Both of us were looking for our respective lone tree along the Negombo Coastline and search we did. The initial grand plan of exploring a few places was withered down as the scorching sun was relentless in wearing us down..

A LE shot of the coastline to share. Nothing much to shout about, just a simple shot of the horizon.. I like the amazing horizon of NOTHING, this is something that is hard to find in SG. :)

I like this one, very nice.

This one also.

Hi guys, been unwell yesterday and got diarrhea today presumably from hawker center food. Ha ha.

ClemC – I remembered you once asked me what's there to shoot in Sri Lanka. Well, either you are just being humble or underestimated yourself. The 1st 2 shots were impressive esp. the 2 fishermen with shadows. Both simple yet powerful.

You guys may not able to see many (or none) food photography as the anchored man was not around. Perhaps at a less fast and furious pace also.

Here's 2 shots of our hotel “backyard”

Your second 'backyard' shot is nice :)
