dun use sports mode the ISO is @ 800- will spoil the picture, sports mode needs alot of light- outdoors light......try using flash if u r indoor (that's wat i do with my dogs) actually outdoor will work too-the natural colors will still be there...if outdoor get the right angle of the sun.
hi emirtes

thanks for your advice.. may i just confirm that i should just use normal mode with flash? i've tried taking close up shots of her.. turns out the background is clearer than her.. :P

i'm not too confident to take pics of my dog when outdoor...she's a golden retriever.. need to leash her at all times.. and i''m afraid she will just take off... :P

This is lovely. Love the tone on the roof, very 3D.:)

agree...If I'm taking the pic...I would have exposed the pic longer, and will never have the effect like urs. Lol...meaning that I really should keep the brackets on for all my pics...U'll never know what u missed out

Now a days S5 can shoot in RAW, you can try to play with it...its up to +/-3 t 4 stops of PP adjustment.:)

Sigh...using S3...so I can't shoot RAW...otherwise all the shots will be in Raw...lol That's why moving into 40D...lol. I hate the limitations of shooting indoors and noise performance by Sxi.. Was thinking about getting S5..but after looking at the dpreview...the performance is about the same. Not sure about the focus. But for S3i...its autofocus under low light or contrast is really bad..autofocus is bad in the arse for the snow pics...and when u switch to manual, it's hard to tell whether it's focus or not (that's why i bracket the focus too). Tried playing with 350D before...could manual focus pretty sharply and fast..so moving into dslr..especially, i noticed that half of my pics re indoor. 50mm f1.4 and 40D....come to papa...lol

Nicely exposed and sharp! Good white balance too.

Like the pic with sharp details of the snow.

Thanks.... there's a fair bit of PP involved, mainly on shadows and highlight to bring out the details of the snow. The original pic looked boring...Most of my snow pics re under exposed...the cloudy snowing morning doesn't makes things easier. Just a warning to people who re going to take pics of snow with Sxi...(snow trips re really ex) Bracket ur pics by 1/2 to 1.5 stops. It's kind of tricky for ur WB too...if u're really anal, custom ur WB on the snow before taking pic (often time, u won't ve time.) Caution...custom WB only works on the proximity where u set ur WB. Reset it again on a different location (as in several tens metres away...). If u want the details of the snow...u have to underexpose it...if u want details of the person's face...u'll ve to overexpose the snow but u lose the details of the snow. Can't ve both... So bracket it and decide whether u want the snow or the person or the subject on the com. And ya...don't on ur camera when u're back in ur hotel or cafe...let it sit in the bag and warm up slowly...the condensation is quite bad in the camera.. Fortunately, it didn't shock my cam..just a foggy lens for about 20mins. Oh ya...if it's a bright and sunny day on the snow mountain...TAKE IT! the weather can just changed and never comes back. MY first day is bright and sunny...but was snowboarding...and only start taking pics on the last day...hai...anyway...snowboard is more fun..I'm an adrenaline junkie...got a sore neck, hips and arse. lol. Crashed and landed on the head at about 30km/h. haha. Just a few lessons learned during my snow trip... like bringing a helmet too...

An example of whether ve details of snow...or not....this pic to my opinion is underexposed...but if i zap up the exposure...i lose the details...sigh

If it's snowing...and ur with ur loved ones...remember to take this pic. Just remember to make sure ur shutter speed is fast enough. And find a patch of snow that can bounce the light up to the face. =D too bad...my baby wasn't with me.... this is a pic of some random couple. Sigh...never ve a good pic of meself..

The firmware hack for S5 not applicable to S3 meh? I am not sure, but thought it should be. By the way S5 has external hotshoe, so low light shooting is much improved. I have just attended the NDP on 09 Aug (can see from my flickr if interested) and it was really a pain to keep changing from 80-200 to 12-24...for an instant I was thinking of having the S5 for the tele-shots while keeping my other cam as wide angle...but you are right, low light it will struggle, even my 80-200 f2.8 did and I need to up to ISO 1250...Now that S5 has much improvement over S3, I hope that S6 will have bigger sensor, like the Nikon P5100, P6000 or even the Sigma DP1 and this will be another great improvement.

Personally I believe that PP is necessary to bring out the best of a photo, but some people just think that PP is not necessary if one is skillful enough...

A good lesson on snow shooting. Thanks for sharing.:)

The S3IS can shoot raw when using the CDK firmware, same as the S5IS.

These kind of cameras use contrast detection for auto focus. So if what you are shooting is all of the same colour and tone, it will not lock focus (Like a wall or snow). Entry level dSLR will give you a similar problem also, especially when not using the centre focus point (Their focus mechanism is a bit different though).

Enjoy the 50 f1.4 & the 40D!

Thats true. Use the AF light.:)

Firmware hack? where do u get that done?? well, warranty is already over...i don't mind getting it done. I'm just use PP to correct the shadows, highlights, WB, and tweak the exposure abit.... well, i guess most digicam do that when they take the pic isn't it? yea...wear a helmet when taking pics too.. u'll never know when u're gonna be hit by a rookie skier or snowboarder...haha...i was the snowboader.

Seen ur flickr....all the pics seemed to be taken by D80

Yea, that's why snow and low light is pain in the bum. The reasons on why I'm go into dSLR is because the ease of manual focus (probably will use that most of the time, especially at night, except for sports stuff - my fingers, eyes and brain re not fast enough) and the noise that i find it annoying even the pic is taken at iso100 by S3i

I think u probably have to train her first to make the photography session easier for u...lol
